Leak suggests Android and ChromeOS will receive tighter device integration

Android devices and ChromeOS may become best friends in the near future, as Google is reportedly working on better integration between the two platforms.

Hints of this move were discovered by industry experts Assemble debugging in X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) recently compromised the files of Google Play Services version 24.06.12. After activating some internal flags, I discovered that two new features are currently in development and certain sections will be renamed to accommodate the changes. As 9To5Google points out, “Device Connectivity” will be renamed to “Devices and Sharing” and a new option called Cross-Device Services will be added.

The first time users tap this section, they will be able to select the Android smartphones and Chromebooks they want on their cross-device network. There seems to be no limit to the number of gadgets that can be connected at the same time. During this time, it appears that you can send invitations in batches to nearby hardware. Once setup is complete, you will have access to the features mentioned above. It’s unclear exactly how these tools work, but note that there is a short description below each tool that provides a little insight.

Call Cast supposedly allows you to move between devices during a call, but it “only works with certain apps.” Internet sharing, on the other hand, is more ambiguous. Judging by the text on the screen, the user will be provided with a way to share her hotspot connection and her Wi-Fi password to members in the group on her devices. Eliminate the hassle of re-entering your password every time you add another phone.

impending developments

That’s pretty much all we can glean from this latest information dump. Given that AssembleDebug was able to trigger the update and the interface is nearly complete, I think it’s safe to say that the patch will be rolled out soon. It’s unclear exactly when it will be released, but Android Police predicts it will be released alongside other updates next month to coincide with Google’s March feature drop. These include an eSIM transfer tool and Bluetooth quick settings.

As with all leaks, take all the details here with a grain of salt. Circumstances can change at any time. However, if released as is, it will be a major upgrade to the current mobile environment. Chromebooks already offer cross-device connectivity to Android, but that’s primarily limited to streaming apps. By improving usability in this way, Google may eventually be able to establish a hardware ecosystem similar to Apple’s.
