Grand Theft Auto 5 has had a long run on multiple platforms since its release in 2013. Fueled by the popularity of GTA Online, GTA 5 continues to captivate players on his PlayStation, Xbox consoles, and PC. However, ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 next year, GTA 5 may be available to more players on mobile and Nintendo Switch platforms, but not officially. Third-party developers are reportedly working on ports of the game to Android, Linux, and Nintendo Switch.
Grand Theft Auto news portal GTA Focal (@GTAFocal) claimed in an X post last week that a group of modders is trying to port GTA 5 to Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Android. This new development reportedly comes as a result of a GTA 5 source code leak dating back to December of last year.
“Thanks to source code leaked in December, a group of modders is porting GTA 5 to Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Android,” the post states. The video and screenshots attached to the post showed GTA 5’s loading screen with an error message on Nintendo Switch and Android. This leak suggests that the port is not yet fully functional on the platform.
The effort to bring GTA 5 to Android and Nintendo Switch is being led by modders and third-party developers. Rockstar Games has not announced a port of his GTA 5 to these platforms. The developer released an “enhanced and enhanced” version of his GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in 2022, featuring visual and performance improvements on current-gen consoles.
In December 2023, Rockstar Games suffered a hack that leaked the entire GTA 5 source code. The leak also included GTA 6 code and files from a rumored sequel to the company’s 2006 game Bully.
As of February 2024, GTA 5 has sold over 195 million copies worldwide. Initially released on PS3 and Xbox 360, the game is available on his PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. Its long-awaited sequel, GTA 6, received a reveal trailer last December, and it has been confirmed that it will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in 2025.
