Written by James Cancellich March 26, 24, 10:40 p.m.

first issue of rice remedy journalthe first student-published health science journal covering topics ranging from LGBTQ+ health care to the history of cancer, was published online on January 7th.

Editor-in-Chief Anuska Santora said there are currently about 15 people working on the journal, including a team of writers who write about health science-related topics of interest.

Santora, who studies health sciences and neuroscience at Sid Richardson College, co-authored the magazine with fellow Sid junior Bryant Polanco to highlight the scope and interdisciplinary nature of health sciences at Rice University. He said he founded the . She previously worked writing for the neuroscience journal Neurotransmitter, but she said she felt she was more interested in health science topics.

“[Polanco and I] They were interested in things beyond neuroscience, and we were interested in something broader that was more aligned with the health science majors,” Santora said. “So we [started] A magazine that appealed a little more to our personal interests. ”

Santora said she felt the need for the magazine because health science is often not understood by many students.

“Many people don’t really understand what health science means,” Santora says. “At Rice University, the health sciences are public health, what public health looks like, what public health professionals do…as I discovered, it’s very interdisciplinary. . Almost everything I learn can be connected in some way to people’s health, and that’s very interesting to me.”

Santora said their interest in art also drew them to creating a magazine featuring the students’ designs.

“The art in this magazine is very thoughtful,” Santora says. “I love art. I love thinking about art. I think my nerdy boyfriend’s STEM background could turn into art.”

Polanco, who also studies health science and neuroscience, said his interest in art also inspired him to start the magazine with Santora.

“I had a lot of background in design and graphic design,” Polanco said. “I want to make [health sciences] It’s more accessible, more fun, and looks more appealing. ”

HEALAR faculty advisor Cassandra Dieppe, assistant professor of health sciences, said the health sciences major and HEALAR prepare students for careers in health policy. She wrote the inaugural address for her Rice Remedy, a HEALAR publication.

“The Health Sciences major introduces students to public health, specifically health promotion and behavioral sciences,” Dieppe wrote in an email to Thresher. “But we also incorporate epidemiology, health policy, biostatistics, and other areas of public health.”

Akshay Sethi, a third-year student at Sid Richardson University studying biological sciences and political science, wrote the following paper: Rice Remedy Article Understanding the geographic determinants of health in Harris County. His project investigates disproportionate health impacts based on proximity to the petrochemical industry.

“To begin the research process, [looked at] …about the founding of the city of Houston in the 1800s and how it was planned,” Sethi said. “How did zoning work? We don’t have zoning laws here, but how did Houston’s plan work and what specific areas were redlined?”

In his article, Sethi proposes new zoning laws and tighter regulations for the petrochemical industry. In the future, Sethi said he hopes to publish photojournalism articles on Rice Remedies documenting communities that are often disproportionately affected by the petrochemical industry.

“I [want to] We’ll be traveling around Houston…taking photos around spots we’ve previously researched and highlighting different communities and regions,” Sethi said. “There is a lot of intersecting history in how geography has influenced people’s lives. [those] community and neighborhood. ”
