Wisely asserts that there is “determination” to make the Rwanda project a success despite the lord’s defeat
This afternoon and evening, the House of Lords handed the government five defeats on a bill to rescue the beleaguered Rwanda program.
Peers passed five amendments that undermined key parts of the bill, sparking a battle between the Lords and the Commons to agree a final version of the bill (more information here).
The Home Secretary told broadcasters tonight that ministers were “absolutely determined to pass this bill in the House of Commons to enable flights to Rwanda”.
“We’re working very closely with the Rwandan government to prepare for that, because it’s important to send the message: no smuggling, no smuggling, no smuggling into the UK, stay. “
James Cleverley said the government does not have a majority in the House of Lords and ministers “recognize the reality of the situation” in pushing for amendments to the bill.
But, he continued, “I’ve said many times that we want to make sure this law is solid. We want to make sure it works.”
“But I will also ensure that no destructive amendments aimed at destroying the bill are accepted.”
He added: “We are determined to make this a success.”
