Kamala Harris slams Alabama court ruling on frozen embryos and in vitro fertilization

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris denounced the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that frozen embryos should be considered children under state law, saying the decision already has dangerous consequences for women in the state. insisted.

“This decision is outrageous and already takes away women’s freedom to decide when and how to start a family,” Harris said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that embryos created through in vitro fertilization are “children outside the womb” and are legally protected like any other child. IVF advocates fear the ruling could eventually spread to other states and have far-reaching implications for the millions of Americans struggling to conceive.

Approximately 2% of annual births in the United States involve in vitro fertilization, a process in which multiple eggs are collected, fertilized, and implanted to create a pregnancy.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks before President Joe Biden during an event on the campus of George Mason University on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, in Manassas, Virginia. She will campaign for abortion rights, which is the most important issue for the Democratic Party in the upcoming presidential election.

The court’s recent decisions repeatedly cite the Christian faith and the Alabama Constitution, which specifically protects unborn children, usually referring to fetuses developing in the womb. Alabama adopted an abortion ban in 2022.

“This is exactly the moment when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, paving the way for politicians to dictate some of the most personal decisions families make,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday. “This is the kind of disruption we expected.”

“Across the country, women are being forced to contend with the devastating consequences of actions by Republican lawmakers,” she said.

President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has been active in restoring abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, which had recognized a 50-year constitutional right to abortion. We are working. Harris has helped spearhead the Biden administration’s efforts to protect access to abortion.

As the Biden campaign prepares for what is expected to be a rematch with Republican front-runner Donald Trump in the general election, the Biden campaign is trying to convince female voters that Trump’s three Supreme Court appointments helped dismantle Roe. I have tried to remind you of this. This week, the campaign cited a New York Times report that said President Trump had privately expressed support for a national ban on abortions after 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Nikki Haley, President Trump’s only viable opponent in the Republican primary, said Wednesday that she agrees with the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling.

“To me, a fetus is a baby,” Haley told NBC News. “When you talk to me about fetuses, it’s about life. So when they talk about that, I understand where it’s coming from.”
