US stock markets will be closed on Wednesday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.
The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Wednesday and will reopen on Thursday, June 20. The U.S. bond market will also be closed on June 19, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Most restaurants, grocery stores, and retailers will be open on the holiday, but banks and U.S. post offices will be closed.
Known as America’s Second Independence Day, Juneteenth has been commemorated as a federally recognized holiday since 2021, providing millions of Americans with a paid day off and an opportunity to commemorate the end of slavery.
The holiday commemorates the day in 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger led 2,000 Union soldiers into Galveston Bay, Texas, and proclaimed the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state free.
After closing for Juneteenth, Wall Street will operate as usual through early July. The next stock market closure will be on Thursday, July 4th, in observance of Independence Day.
