The iPhone 16 model isn’t the only exciting new iPhone Apple is developing. The company’s next-generation mid-ranger, the iPhone SE 4, has been appearing frequently in reports. Apple must be working on a new iPhone that will sell for less than $500 next year.
Considering the rumors, I’m already a big fan of the iPhone SE 4. I think this device will be exactly what many users need. For teenagers and older users, the new iPhone SE 4 is a great option. The device should also do well in emerging markets where other iPhone models are more expensive.
If recent spec leaks are accurate, there’s even more reason to be excited about what the iPhone SE 4 has to offer. I can say this because I am a long-time iPhone user. I know how great the overall experience is even if you don’t buy the most expensive model.
leaker named Nguyen Phi Hung X on (via) phone arena) lists purported specs for the iPhone SE 4 in more detail than any other source. It is impossible to verify the information below, but it all makes sense.
The front of the iPhone SE 4 is expected to be similar to the iPhone 13. That means it will be an all-screen design with a Face ID notch at the top. The back is similar to the iPhone XR model, with only one camera. The handset requires a 7000 series aluminum alloy chassis and right-angle frame.
The front and back are made of glass. But Apple probably won’t use strong Ceramic Shield glass for this. However, even if you’re carrying a modern iPhone with a strong ceramic glass panel, it’s still a good idea to wear a case.
According to the leaker, the iPhone SE 4 weighs 166g and measures 148.5 x 71.2 x 7.8 mm. These dimensions match the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13. iPhone SE 4 may be slightly more expensive. This could indicate some kind of compromise regarding bezel size, but I’m just speculating.
The screen size is 6.1 inches, the same as the current iPhone 15, but with a 60Hz LTPS OLED panel. As an iPhone 14 user whose display refresh rate is set to dynamic 60 Hz, I can tell you that a 60 Hz screen is not a problem for his iPhone.
The leaker states that the iPhone SE 4 will run on the Apple A16 Bionic chipset. This is the same chip used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15/Plus models. A16 remains one of the most powerful chips in the industry.
If Apple used the A18 instead, the iPhone SE 4 would be on par with the next iPhone 16 model in terms of performance.
According to a spec leak, the new SE 4 will come with 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 128GB or 512GB of NVMe flash memory. As for connectivity, we’re looking at a Snapdragon X70 radio, Apple’s U1 UWM chip, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and a USB-C port with USB 2.0 speeds.
According to the Phone SE 4 battery rumors, the device will come with a 30xx mAh battery. The leaker also points out reports that Apple will use his 3,279 mAh battery in the phone. The phone supports 20W wired charging and 12W wireless MagSafe charging.

Finally, according to the spec leak, the iPhone SE 4 will be equipped with a Sony IMX503 camera with a 1/2.55 pixel size and f/1.8 aperture. Supports 1080p Cinematic Mode, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR, AI Photo, and Portrait Mode. According to the leak, support for night mode will not be included.
If true, all of this would make the iPhone SE 4 a great device for a certain category of buyers. Admittedly, the 60Hz display and single-lens camera can be perceived as a downgrade compared to the competition. And I recently said that the iPhone SE 4 will have a strong rival in the upcoming Pixel 8a smartphone. Google’s next affordable Pixel should feature a 120Hz screen and dual-lens camera.
Still, the iPhone SE 4 offers better performance. The longevity of the hardware is long enough that I expect it to outlast the Pixel 8.
Price is an important factor here. We expect the iPhone SE 4 to cost less than $500. But if Apple can somehow keep the price of the basic version below $450, the iPhone SE 4 could become a serious hit next year. The iPhone SE 3 starts at $429 and is available from Apple, but we don’t recommend buying it at that price in 2024.
