This weekend, an image leaked on X (formerly Twitter) showing off the case for the upcoming iPhone SE 4 and revealing some key hints about the phone’s design. Apple’s low-cost iPhone has been updated every few years since its return in 2020, so it’s about time for a refresh. If these iPhone SE 4 leaks turn out to be accurate, it looks like Apple may finally give the iPhone SE a much-needed design update.

iPhone SE 4 leak reveals case design
On March 30, user @MajinBuOfficial leaked an image to X (formerly Twitter) showing the iPhone SE 4 case, which revealed the phone’s design. The back of the case has a slot for a single-lens camera, and it looks like there’s room for the wide, square sides of modern iPhones. The screen size also appears to be larger than the previous iPhone SE model.
Although Apple has yet to officially announce the latest version of its budget iPhone, there are several reasons why this leak could turn out to be accurate. First, the iPhone SE will be getting a refresh soon. Apple released iPhone SE 2 on April 24, 2020 and iPhone SE 3 on March 11, 2022.
So this is historically the time when Apple announces the new iPhone SE. So it’s certainly possible that it’s currently gearing up for release. If that’s true, it makes sense that third-party companies might already be making cases for the iPhone SE 4. However, it’s worth noting that Apple’s roadmap leaked in March has an iPhone SE 4 release date scheduled for 2025, so Apple may change its SE release pattern. .
Timing aside, the design seen in this leak is also plausible. The iPhone SE design was already outdated when the 2020 model was released. It has become completely retro now. It’s time for Apple to ditch the iPhone SE’s home button and thick bezel. Especially considering that phones in its price range, such as the Pixel 7a, now have much more modern designs. Even Apple is having a hard time justifying keeping such an outdated design in the SE.
So it’s no surprise that the iPhone SE 4 will look noticeably different from previous models. Apple tends to borrow designs from previous flagships for low-cost technology, so the SE 4 will likely feature a hand-me-down design from the iPhone 12, 13, or even 14. The designs of these iPhone SE 4 leaks are consistent. At least in terms of shape.
Is this design refresh too little, too late for the iPhone SE?
I’d love to see a major redesign of the iPhone SE, but will that really be enough to convince budget phone buyers to give Apple a try? Even if the iPhone SE 4 leak turns out to be true, and it gets a new look and updated specs, it may be too little, too late.
According to a carrier store survey, the 2022 iPhone SE did not sell as well as the 2020 model. This is not surprising, considering that the 3rd generation iPhone SE did not differ significantly from his 2020 model. Additionally, people shopping for phones in the $400 to $500 range also have the option of buying a used or refurbished flagship iPhone, which is a little older but has better specs. If you’re a low-budget Android user, there’s even less reason to switch from the latest Pixel or Samsung to the iPhone SE.
So if Apple wants to capture users in this price range, it will need to make some major changes to the iPhone SE 4. This leaked design is a step in the right direction, but I’m curious about the single-lens camera. The Pixel 7a also has dual cameras on the back.
Why is Apple going to the trouble of updating the iPhone SE 4’s design and sticking to a single-lens rear camera? This isn’t the first leak that includes a single-lens camera. The CAD design leaked last month also shows a single-lens rear camera. We hope this particular feature in the leak turns out to be untrue, but it seems like that’s the direction Apple is taking.
One feature I’d love to see added to the iPhone SE 4 is USB-C charging. Unfortunately, we can’t really tell from these leaked case images what kind of charging ports the SE 4 will have.
However, the screen looks noticeably larger than the current iPhone SE, suggesting that previous rumors about a display update may turn out to be true. If the iPhone SE 4 comes with a 6-inch OLED display, we’ll definitely be paying attention, but price will be an important factor.
For this design refresh to be a meaningful update to Apple’s only budget phone, the price needs to remain reasonable. Above $500, it will be a tough sell for many budget cell phone users. It’s still too early to say for sure what the iPhone SE 4 will look like or how much it will cost, so we’ll have to keep waiting for an official announcement from Apple.
