Google announced this week that its suite of AI-based photo editing tools will soon be available to all Google Photos users without a subscription.
Previously, many of these features were limited to Google’s proprietary hardware. For example, Magic Editor was initially released on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, while Magic Eraser was launched exclusively for his Pixel 6. But this development means an iPhone owner can access the same tools without switching to her Android handset.
And you don’t even have to pay. The company previously required users to have a Google One subscription to access AI editing features. That will never happen again.
Google highlights the following in a blog post:
- Unblur photos: Use to sharpen blurry shots.
- Magic Eraser: Remove unwanted people and objects and replace them with realistic backgrounds.
- Portrait Light: Adjust the lighting for portrait photos.
- Magic Editor: Use for complex edits such as changing the position of the subject or changing the color of the sky.
Google says the tool will be “rolled out gradually over the next few weeks starting May 15th to all devices that meet the minimum requirements.” For iPhone owners, these requirements mean a device running iOS 15 or later and with at least 3GB of RAM. (His latest iPhone with less than 3GB was his 2017 iPhone 8. His 8 Plus from the same year also had 3GB.)
