iPhone flip-lip? Apple reportedly suspends sales of foldable iPhone due to cracked screen

Recent leaks indicate that Apple has paused development of a foldable iPhone due to possible screen durability issues. According to blogger Fixes Focus Digital, Apple was purchasing and testing rival foldable smartphones as part of its research and development process and encountered the problem.

At least one of the foldable devices Apple is testing uses a display made by Samsung. The tipster says Samsung’s latest folding panel “failed a few days” after Apple’s test. Due to this issue, Apple has reportedly paused development and has not determined when it will resume. There has been no announcement from either Samsung or Apple regarding this issue, but this situation is not unheard of during development.

It should be noted that this rumor does not mention a planned foldable iPad, and potential durability issues are likely less of a consideration than with tablets. The reason has to do with how we use technology. That means tablets don’t spend as much time in people’s pockets or outside.

However, this information should be taken with a grain of salt as this source doesn’t have much of a history with Apple reveals and leaks. We won’t really know until Apple makes a statement on this issue, which is unlikely unless there is significant progress.

It’s no surprise that Samsung would develop a screen for Apple. The company has been manufacturing displays for Apple since December 2023. There have been several reports about Apple’s foldable display plans, including patents related to expandable screens. There were also other rumors that Apple had developed two prototypes that could be folded widthwise like clams, but there was no mention of them in the 2025 Apple roadmap.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a ton of verified information to help you with Apple’s foldable plans. There is currently no set schedule for Apple to announce this project, and it is highly unlikely that anything will be announced this year. There are also indications that Apple may be planning to release a foldable device at some point in 2027, but this is also unconfirmed.

Considering how resources were spent on Apple Vision Pro, that’s reason enough for the company to delay the launch of a foldable iPhone. Apple has a lot to improve, so delaying the project could be beneficial in the long run.
