The iPhone 16 Pro Max is scheduled to be released this fall, and rumors and leaks are starting to paint a picture of Apple’s next flagship model. But are the new features compelling enough to upgrade?
So far, we’ve heard about possible hardware changes such as a larger display, new A18 Pro chip, and a new capture button. And there are even more rumors about the iPhone 16 Pro Max, including a number of generative AI features. Some of them will be included in iOS 18, and some will likely be exclusive to new iPhones.
Here are the seven biggest iPhone 16 Pro Max upgrades rumored so far.
even bigger display
The iPhone Pro Max series has been equipped with a 6.7-inch display since the iPhone 12 Pro Max was announced in 2020, but it looks like the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the largest model to date. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch display. That would make it even bigger than the 6.8-inch Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Interestingly, the regular iPhone 16 Pro will also have an increased screen size from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches. So if 6.9 inches is too big, there is a medium size option. The good news is that the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s bezels are also expected to be even thinner.
new capture button
The iPhone 15 Pro Max offered the first iPhone with a customizable action button, but Apple is reportedly also adding a new capture button to both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro. Apparently this is not the end. The same goes for the regular iPhone 16.
The button features a solid-state capacitive design with haptic feedback and is said to be located below the power button. The capture button will likely be used to launch the camera and take quick photos, but its “force sensor functionality” could open up other possibilities. For example, you can record a video by pressing harder.
The leaker on Weibo also says that you can use the capture button to focus the iPhone 16’s camera, similar to how you focus on the best mirrorless cameras.
iPhone 16 Pro Max camera upgrade
Apple needed an encore to add a Tetra Prism 5x optical zoom lens to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and apparently the iPhone 16 Pro series will be upgraded with an ultra-wide lens. Both the Pro and Pro Max are expected to feature a 48MP ultra-wide camera, up from 12MP on previous models.
This ultra-wide sensor is also expected to get even bigger, growing from a 1/3.6-inch sensor to a 1/2.6-inch sensor. In addition, the main His 48MP sensor now has his 1/1.4 inch sensor, up from 1/1.28 inch. This should let in more light.
A18 pro chip
The A17 Pro chip was powerful, but if Apple wants the iPhone 16 Pro Max to be its fastest phone, it’ll need to speed it up with the A18 Pro. If the leaked Geekbench scores are any guide, the A18 Pro could reach a single-core result of 3,570 and a multi-core score of 9,310. This is higher than the iPhone 15 Pro series (2,890/7,914), but Qualcomm is not standing still.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra scored 2,300 and 7,249 for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, while the leaked single-core results for the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip came in at 3,500, which should give Apple a good competitive edge.
What we’re most interested in is the machine learning performance of the A18 Pro’s Neural Engine, which helps with generative AI tasks, but we haven’t found any leaks on that yet.
Generation AI
The iPhone 16 Pro Max should receive a ton of generative AI upgrades from iOS 18, which is expected to launch with the new iPhones this fall and be announced at WWDC 2024 in June.
Apple has apparently invested heavily in multiple generative AI tools for the iPhone, including the ability to use voice to automate tasks that normally require multiple steps; This includes a new version of Siri based on large-scale language models (LLM).
Apple is said to be powering five of its apps with AI, including Music, Pages, and Keynote. We’d be shocked if Apple didn’t offer generative AI features in apps like Photos to remove objects from images or fill in the background.
Apple is also said to be in talks with Google about licensing its Gemini products for generative AI. The question is which AI features will be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro, or whether the new iPhones may simply offer better performance due to their more advanced neural engine.
Wi-Fi7
If you’ve never heard of Wi-Fi 7, we don’t blame you, as this technology is still fairly new and the best Wi-Fi 7 routers are quite expensive. But over time, it makes a big difference. Wi-Fi 7 delivers faster speeds with more channels. This means more bandwidth for your device. Multilink operation also allows iPhone 16 Pro Max to send and receive data across different bands and channels simultaneously.
bigger battery
Based on our testing, the iPhone 15 Pro Max already offers impressive battery life, with an impressive 14 hours and 2 minutes of battery life when surfing the web on 5G. It comes with a 4,422 mAh battery, and a leaker on Weibo says the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s battery will be even bigger at 4,676 mAh.
This upgrade also came at a good time. Because our list of best phone battery life includes devices that last over 16 hours, like the Galaxy S24 Ultra (16:45) and OnePlus 12 (18:42). Both of these devices feature even larger batteries paired with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chips, so it will be very interesting to see if the iPhone 16 Pro Max can make it to the top of the list.
