Apple is preparing to launch its iPhone 16 lineup later this year with a number of camera-centric upgrades. The iPhone 15 models were launched with quite a few improvements, but the iPhone 16 is expected to take things to the next level with a new capture button. Few details have been revealed so far, but the iPhone 16’s camera components have just been leaked and are meant to show off a redesigned chassis.
iPhone 16 camera chassis leaks, confirming vertical camera design for base model
It was previously rumored that Apple might switch from a diagonal to a vertical layout for the camera sensor in the iPhone 16. The latest leaked camera components for iPhone 16 are shared as follows: Majinmu on Xsuggesting that the company is indeed working on a vertical design. mcroomers independently verified the authenticity of the component, providing further evidence that the camera component is indeed from the iPhone 16.
This component has been confirmed to be a camera chassis that will house the iPhone 16’s upgraded sensor. Note that the leaked camera chassis belongs to the base model of the iPhone 16 and not the “Pro” model, as it is a dual camera setup. This leak also confirms that the iPhone 16 will feature a vertical camera layout, as Apple plans to do away with the standard iPhone 15’s diagonal layout.
Apple has previously adopted a vertical camera design starting with the iPhone X, which was released in 2017. This design carried over into the iPhone 12, but the company opted to include a diagonal camera on the back with the iPhone 13. This design carried over into Apple’s base iPhone 15 lineup. The company appears to be reconsidering the layout of this year’s iPhone models.
Majin Bu previously shared renders and schematics of the iPhone 16, suggesting that the camera will be positioned vertically. MacRumors further pointed out that the standard model’s camera bump may be slightly slimmer than his iPhone 15 lineup, and the plateau may be slightly shorter. Apple may shrink the camera component in the iPhone 16 lineup or offer a slightly thicker design.

We also previously reported that the iPhone 16 models are expected to come with larger battery capacities. This indicates that the design may be slightly thicker than the iPhone 15 model to accommodate larger battery cells. Leaked components indicate that the iPhone 16 will feature a vertical camera system, while Apple is likely to offer spatial video recording in the standard model. This is currently a feature only available on iPhone 15 Pro models. Spatial video is used in Apple Vision Pro, and the company wants to offer this functionality to users just as it entices users to get Vision Pro.
This is the first leaked part for the iPhone 16 and should be taken with a grain of salt. The company may be testing various pre-production designs for the iPhone 16, and the camera chassis could also be part of the testing phase. We will share further details on this matter as additional information becomes available.
