iPhone 15 Pro Max v Galaxy S24 Ultra v ROG Phone 8 Pro in Gaming Thermal Test

The release of the iPhone 15 Pro has taken smartphone gaming to the next level. This is the first time we’ve seen a new or near-new AAA game title come to smartphones. Titles available on iPhone 15 Pro (and iPad with M1 and M2) include Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

As we noted in our recent benchmark comparison of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Vivo X100 Pro, Apple appears to have resolved the overheating issue that was widely reported shortly after launch. This was the result of a combination of operating system bugs and third-party app issues that could be resolved with subsequent software patches.

Nevertheless, Apple’s use of a titanium frame in the design of the iPhone 15 Pro series has attracted attention. This differs from the more thermally conductive steel frame used in the previous iPhone 14 Pro series. The iPhone 15 Pro is less likely to overheat during general use, but it also runs reliably warmer than previous models, even under light load or idling. As we exclusively revealed, Apple advised technicians that this was “expected behavior” and therefore not considered a hardware failure, but compared to the use of titanium. Considering the rudimentary cooling system, the area seems to be involved.

Another test of the iPhone 15, with overheating issues under control, a new focus on AAA gaming, and the iPhone 15 Pro models apparently running warmer than their predecessors, even when idle. Real world game test:

This test did not focus on frames per second or power consumption, but purely on the temperature of each phone before and after 30 minutes of AAA mobile gaming. While this is just a real-world test of a device’s heat after a typical mobile gaming session, you can see how the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S24 Ultra fare in our latest Geekbench 6 and 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test benchmark articles. To keep things as fair as possible, we have chosen to Alien: Isolation for testing. It’s a AAA title ported from PC and consoles and available on both iOS and Android platforms. It may not be one of the newest AAA games on the market, but it was still graphically demanding and compatible with all mobile phones. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is powered by his A17 Pro, Apple’s first chip with a GPU that supports real-time ray tracing. Both the Galaxy S24 Ultra and ROG Phone 8 Pro are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with Adreno 750 GPU and support for a more advanced form of ray tracing known as global illumination.

Thermal test results:

At the beginning of the session, the ambient temperature in the room was 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 °F). The three phones had their temperatures measured with an infrared temperature monitor on the back of each device before and after a 30-minute gaming session. As you can see from the table below, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s idle temperature was 30.3℃ (86.54F), the Galaxy S24 Ultra was 29.4℃ (84.92F), and the ROG Phone 8 Pro was 29.5℃ (85.1F). F). After playing for 30 minutes Alien: Isolation, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s temperature reached 44.6°C (112.28F), while the Galaxy S24 Ultra recorded 35.1°C (95.18F) and the ROG Phone 8 Pro’s back temperature recorded 34.3°C (93.74°F). . The key point that thermally differentiates the devices and their performance can be quickly identified in the fact that both the Galaxy S24 Ultra and ROG Phone 8 Pro are equipped with vapor chamber cooling systems.

Cooling system and analysis:

The Galaxy S24 Ultra clearly benefits from a new vapor chamber that is 92% larger than the one found in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Its vapor chamber spans both the chip and part of the battery, and uses thermal compound on the chip to transfer heat from the chip to the thermal pad. Behind the steam chamber is a layer of graphite film that borders the copper sheet behind the display.

In addition to the approach taken by Samsung, the ROG Phone 8 Pro also uses boron nitride, an advanced thermal compound that helps transfer heat from the chip to what’s called a “rapid cooling conductor” between the SoC and the metal near the back. I’m using. cover. We also use two layers of graphite sheets on each side of the steam chamber. The benefits of ROG’s cooling system aren’t immediately obvious here compared to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but we ran another benchmark in the 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test to see how it performs under sustained load. confirmed. While 30 minutes of playing a AAA game will definitely test your smartphone’s thermal system, 3D Mark’s stress test will max it out for 20 minutes straight. The benefits of ROG’s more sophisticated cooling approach over the Galaxy 24 Ultra are clear. The highest loop score was 5,222, and the lowest loop score was an incredibly impressive 4,141. For the same chip in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the highest loop score was 4,918, while the lowest was only 2,360.

But as a first non-gaming smartphone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra hits a happy middle ground between the ROG Phone 8 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. That said, the iPhone 15 Pro Max fared worst in this comparison, with operating temperatures about 10 degrees Celsius higher than his other two smartphones after playing 30 minutes of AAA games. There’s no vapor chamber, limited use of graphite, and nothing on the back of the motherboard to keep temperatures in check, so it’s no surprise that it ran just as hot during this test.

This wasn’t noticeable while using the Razer Kiyo v2 controller, but it also didn’t cause any noticeable frame rate drops. Alien: Isolation, if you hold the iPhone 15 Pro Max in your hand and use the touchscreen to play games, it will be very uncomfortable. While it’s definitely great to see new and recent AAA games on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple’s current cooling approach doesn’t really cut it. The A17 Pro is an extremely powerful chip that delivers on Apple’s promise of a gaming console you can put in your pocket.

Titanium alloy and titanium:

Titanium has a lower thermal conductivity than steel, and the fact that the iPhone 15 Pro uses titanium doesn’t help either. This means that while heat is more easily dissipated through the steel frame used in the iPhone 14 Pro, it is more likely to be trapped within the chassis, causing heat to build up, especially under load. Masu. The iPhone 14 Pro, like the iPhone 15 Pro, uses a minimal cooling solution, so it wasn’t exactly underpowered. Switching to titanium without further thermal mitigation appears to be the biggest factor in why the iPhone 15 Pro got so hot in this test.

However, it’s also worth noting that the Galaxy S24 Ultra also uses a titanium frame. Recent reports suggest that Apple is using a stronger and more expensive grade 5 titanium alloyed with aluminum (6%) and vanadium. Samsung uses the cheaper Grade 2 titanium, which is unalloyed and considered commercially pure (CP). Although not as strong as Grade 5 titanium, it has the advantage of being slightly more thermally conductive. The future of iPhone AAA gaming and thermals:

Apple was previously rumored to be testing vapor chambers in its iPhones, but so far they have yet to materialize in shipping products, which is disappointing. More recent rumors point to Apple using graphene in addition to graphite to reduce heat, and studies conducted on this approach show that it is a highly effective cooling method for electronic devices. It has been proven that there is. Apple has reduced the weight of his iPhone 15 Pro Max by a significant 19 grams, so the addition of a vapor chamber may undo some of this good work.

However, the hardware hackers who redesigned the iPhone 15 Pro to include a vapor chamber demonstrated a significant increase in thermal performance, clearly highlighting the benefits that can be achieved with such an approach. If we’re lucky, Apple might adopt a combination of graphene and graphite sheets in the next iPhone 16 Pro series, but that’s only for owners of the current iPhone 15 Pro series who should actually benefit from the more robust cooling. It does little to help. Solution now.

If Apple wants to get serious about AAA gaming on the iPhone, and we hope so, it needs to introduce a more sophisticated thermal cooling solution.
