Apple has announced its latest top-of-the-line smartphone. iPhone 15 Pro Maxtowards the end of 2023, how does it compare to 2022? iPhone 14 Pro Max?
We’ve compared the two smartphones to help you decide if it’s worth buying the latest model, or if you should save your money and stick with your 2022 iPhone. Keep reading to find out all the important differences between iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
design and display
The two Pro Max smartphones share a very similar design. However, there are some differences that distinguish them.
First, the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses a new titanium design, replacing the stainless steel frame of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Titanium is more durable and lighter than steel, making it 19g lighter than the new model. I found that this made the phone easier to hold and felt much lighter in my hand.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max also includes a new action button instead of the usual ring/silent switch on the side of the phone. Customizable buttons can be programmed to perform different actions when pressed, such as opening the camera or launching your favorite app.
As for the display, the two phones share an identical 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion refresh rate and always-on functionality.

Specs and features
As you might expect from the latest model, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is equipped with a new chipset, the A17 Pro. This is actually the first ‘Pro’ chipset in the iPhone series and features an additional GPU core compared to the A16 Bionic found in the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
A17 Pro features 10% better CPU performance, 20% faster GPU performance, and is the first Apple smartphone chip based on 3nm architecture.
In many benchmark tests, we found that the A17 Pro maintains a comfortable lead over its top Android competitors.
Other changes to the iPhone 15 Pro Max include Apple eliminating the 128GB minimum capacity, supporting Wi-Fi 6E from Wi-Fi 6, and adding a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.
camera
The iPhone 15 Pro Max features the same triple camera setup as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The two camera modules consist of a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor. Both phones support his 4K video recording at up to 60fps.
One of the big upgrades here is an improvement to the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s optical zoom, increasing the zoom from 3x to 5x. This allows you to get closer to your subject without worrying about the image quality deteriorating as with images taken with digital zoom.
We found that while the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x is much more useful than the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 3x, it still falls far short of the zoom offered by the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
iPhone 15 Pro Max also benefits from support for 4K/60fps ProRes video during external recording, log video recording, Academy Color Encoding System and the latest Smart HDR 5.

battery life
The iPhone 15 series marked the beginning of Apple’s long-awaited transition to USB-C. This means that the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a USB-C port instead of the regular Lightning port.
This is a welcome change that not only makes it easier to use the same cable on different devices such as tablets and laptops, but also brings support for USB 3. This means you can also benefit from up to 20x faster data transfer.
Finally, the iPhone 15 Pro Max supports the latest Qi2 wireless charging standard.
verdict
The iPhone 15 Pro Max looks identical to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but there are some updates to the design and specs that are worth considering. Key upgrades this year include a titanium design, A17 Pro chipset, and a move to Apple’s USB-C.
However, the removal of the 128GB option means the iPhone 15 Pro Max now costs more than its predecessor.
