Thanks to the latest update, the entire iPhone 12 series now supports Qi2 wireless charging. According to tests conducted by Macworld, an iPhone 12 with iOS 17.4 can be charged at 15W when connected to a third-party Qi2 wireless charger.

iPhone 12 series supports Qi2 wireless charging

As many of you may know, the iPhone 12 was limited to 7.5W Qi charging with third-party wireless charging. Well, as long as the Qi2 standard is in motion, that’s no longer the case. It can also be charged at 7.5W using a regular Qi charger.

Newer iPhones already have that feature enabled. Support for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series was launched in December. It arrived with the iOS 17.2 update. The iPhone 12 took a while to arrive, but support is finally here.

There are more and more Qi2 accessories on the market, which is great. The Qi2 standard brings MagSafe functionality to essentially any mobile phone. Apple worked with the Wireless Power Consortium to make this happen.

Qi2 accessories use magnets, similar to MagSafe

Qi2 accessories, like MagSafe, use magnets to perfectly align your device so it can start charging. Unfortunately it’s limited to 15W, but at least it uses magnets.

As many of you may know, many smartphones out there support wireless charging, which is much faster than 15W. There are many phones with 50W wireless charging, but there are also phones with 80W and 100W wireless charging.

If you use one of these devices, this may seem pretty unappealing. However, if you’re charging your device overnight, you won’t really notice it. This also allows you to magnetize the battery pack on the back of your phone if you wish, which is very convenient. However, you will need a compatible phone or the accessories that come with that phone.
