iOS 18 may finally bring a proper password manager to iPhones

As Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports, Apple’s new iOS 18 iPhone software, along with iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, may feature a full-fledged passwords app. This will build on the iCloud Keychain that’s familiar across Apple’s various operating systems, but put them in one easily accessible place.

Gurman says Password will be available to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users, as well as anyone lucky enough to own a Vision Pro, as part of the rumored visionOS 2.0 upgrade. There’ll also apparently be a Windows version if you need to take Password outside the Apple ecosystem.

The Passwords app stores your login details for various accounts, as well as Wi-Fi network details and your passkey (if you’ve set one), and also acts as an authenticator app for any accounts you set up with 2FA.

It’s already possible to manage passwords on your iPhone and other Apple devices thanks to iCloud Keychain and various options in the Settings app, but the options are separated, making them difficult to manage effectively. A dedicated app would be a much more intuitive way to review and access your login details.

The fact that Gurman claims you can bulk import passwords into the app suggests that Apple is indeed taking aim at the best password managers like 1Password and Keeper. However, as exciting as this sounds, it’s unlikely that the password app will be the focus of next week’s WWDC 2024. Instead, we expect Apple’s AI additions to its various operating systems to take center stage this time around.

Before the event starts, be sure to check out our iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 hubs for more rumors, and if you want to watch for yourself, find out how to watch WWDC 2024.
