Who runs the world? You know.
For years, women have been fighting to reach the top. Successful people have become pioneers in their own right.
Take Dominique Sennequier, CEO of private equity giant Ardian, for example. She was one of the first women to enroll at the Ecole Polytechnique University. Last month Alison Kirkby became the first female CEO of telecoms company BT in its 178-year history.
When we surveyed some of Europe’s most influential women for International Women’s Day, we found one thing in common: the wealth of experience they bring to the table.
We found about 35% luck 500 female CEOs in Europe and half of European women luck‘s list of Most Influential Women includes those 55 and older. Among that group, we found seasoned professionals from every industry, from commodities to financial services to pharmaceuticals, who have spent decades in the corporate world.
To celebrate their great achievements this International Women’s Day, luck A carefully selected selection of female leaders over the age of 55 who are at the helm of European companies. We leveraged our flagship list—luck At the same time, we look at other future leaders – Europe’s 500 Most Powerful Women.
This inaugural list will be the first of many highlighting the continent’s, and perhaps the world’s, greatest female business leaders. This list is not exhaustive, but it reveals how women leaders are shaking up the world today.
No matter how you look at it, the number of female CEOs in Europe is unacceptably low.when luck We published our debut list of Europe’s top 500 companies based on last year’s revenue and found that only 7% of companies are run by women. This is just a small sample and reveals how much work we still have to do.
There is a clear business case for doing so. A study of FTSE 350 companies by consultancy The Pipeline found that women-led companies have higher profitability and lead to more climate-related investment.

Halvor Morland/Hydro
Hilde Merete Asheim, CEO of Norsk Hydro
Arsheim is truly a jack of all trades. She has led Norwegian aluminum energy giant Norsk Hydro since 2019, guiding the company through the highs and lows of demand and price fluctuations during the pandemic. Starting out as an accountant, she has worked her way up the ranks over 35 years, holding positions ranging from human resources to senior management. Mr. Arsheim, who currently serves as Hydro’s CEO and president, has been with the company for nearly 20 years.
“The best thing you can do is when you get an opportunity, instead of thinking about all the challenges, say yes and look at it more as an opportunity,” Asheim said in an interview with S&P Global last year. Ta.

Belén Garijo, Merck KGaA CEO
Garijo’s journey began as a doctor in Spain. Eventually, she made it to her boardroom. She is currently one of the few female CEOs in the large chemical and life sciences sector, and the first female CEO of the 355-year-old Merck Company. She also serves on the board of French beauty giant L’Oréal.
Garijo was honored for her work promoting gender diversity. More than a third of Merck’s top leaders are women.
“Even today, many women in science will encounter people who are resistant to changing the status quo. We need to be surrounded by people,” Garijo said in a LinkedIn post last month.
Merck was ranked 165th. luck Selected for the European 500 list, Garijo was ranked 30th on the Most Powerful Women list.

Dominique Senequier, CEO of Ardian
Leading one of Europe’s largest private equity firms is no small feat.
Senequier rose to fame in 1996 by founding the private equity arm of insurance company AXA. The company eventually changed to Ardian in 2013 and is now a large operating company with 1,050 employees.
But Senequier’s pioneering journey began long before that, when she was one of seven admitted to the Ecole Polytechnique in 1972 as its first female student.
Under the direction of a French private equity veteran, Ardian is committed to bringing more women into the financial industry. Last year, 42% of the company’s new employees were women.
Senequier was ranked 66th luck‘s 2023 Most Powerful Women List.

Margherita della Valle, CEO of Vodafone
Della Valle has spent most of his life, over 30 years, with British telecommunications giant Vodafone. During that time, she has held a variety of roles from marketing to finance.
She served as the group’s CFO for several years before becoming CEO in 2023.
The Italian-born economics graduate is among nine FTSE 100 companies run by women.
Since taking over Vodafone, she has embarked on a major restructuring effort, reducing the number of markets in which it operates and boosting its flagging share price.
“Being a woman in business today is a bit of a superpower because you have a different voice,” she said. this is money. “It’s very difficult to get around the table. But once you’re there, you have a different perspective, so your voice can really be heard.”

Ana Botín, Santander Executive Chairman
Banking is in the Botin blood.
She took over from her father Emilio in 2014 as executive chairman of Banco Santander, one of Europe’s largest banks. Botin is the fourth generation of her family to lead the company.
Mr. Botin is a banking industry expert in every sense of the word, having spent his entire career in the banking industry since joining JPMorgan in New York in 1980.
She expanded the bank to new heights, establishing it as a multinational company while expanding the presence of women on the board and at senior leadership levels. Mr. Botin also serves on the board of directors of The Coca-Cola Company.
In Botin’s view, rotating women in different roles at a bank can be a useful way to uplift women and provide them with opportunities to climb the career ladder faster, she said. CNBC last year.

Here are two leaders who we believe will inspire your future success.
Barbara Martin Coppola, CEO of Decathlon
Martin Coppola is a true global citizen, having lived and worked in nine countries. Her corporate history includes Google and Ikea, and she took the top job at French sports retailer Decathlon in 2022. She is the family-owned company’s first female CEO and its first externally hired chief.
She is an expert in business development and digital expansion, two elements she hopes will propel Decathlon to new heights. This retailer may be relatively young (47 years old) compared to the other companies highlighted above, but Decathlon already operates in 70 countries and is one of the world’s largest sports companies. She has established herself as one of them.
In Martin Coppola’s first year as CEO, Decathlon’s sales increased by 12% annually. But that’s not all. She doubled the number of women in senior management positions.

Debra Crews, CEO of Diageo
Crews had a big job to do when he took over from Ivan Menezes, one of the longest-serving CEOs in the FTSE 100. Crewe, 53, joins a small but powerful group of women leading the FTSE 100 company as Diageo chief.
Crews is a veteran of the food and beverage industry, having worked at Pepsi, Nestlé and others before joining the Guinness company. She has a difficult task at hand as the world’s largest spirits maker faces challenges ranging from overstocks to weak demand.
Before Crews entered the corporate world, she served as an officer in the U.S. military.
