monroe, louisiana – Naresh Chhetri and Abhishek Amgain, international students from Nepal and ULM computer science majors, created a computer science workshop for first-year high school students as part of the ULM TRiO program activities. Pushkar Kandel, an international student from Nepal majoring in Mathematics and Actuarial Sciences, helped create the workshop. All three hold on-campus positions as instructors for her TRiO participants at ULM. On March 14, 2024, we held a computer science workshop for TRiO staff that was well received. Chhetri and Amgain will now pilot the workshop in her 9th grade robotics, math, and science classrooms in selected schools in the TRiO Educational Talent Search region.

Amgain said, “We believe this workshop will help raise students’ awareness of the importance of computer science and its impact on their future.” It helps you understand the different opportunities and make decisions about your career path.”

“Imagine computer science as a superpower, the ability to turn numbers and logic into incredible inventions. Just as mathematics helps us understand the world, learning computer science helps us understand the world. to help change for the better,” Kandel said.

The purpose of this TRiO ETS initiative is to encourage young students to explore careers in the rapidly growing technology industry and educate students in STEM fields with a particular focus on computer science and career exploration. Freshman-level workshops will focus on areas of computer science including software engineering, programming languages and coding, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, cryptography, cybersecurity, and more, including careers in these fields. . Students are encouraged to select appropriate high school mathematics courses to prepare for a career in computer science.

“We are excited to introduce our students to the transformative world of computer science. Our workshops will spark their curiosity and expose them to exciting career possibilities in the ever-evolving technology industry. The idea is to show them,” Chhetri said.

ULM hosts three federally funded TRiO programs. Student Support Services (SSS) provides services to university students. Child Care Access Means Parents In School (CCAMPIS) helps parents of college students with childcare costs and parenting skills. The other is Educational Talent Search (ETS), which serves middle school and high school students. The goal of the TRiO program is to increase the number of underrepresented, disadvantaged, or first-generation people who persevere and graduate from high school and college. TRiO participants must meet federal eligibility requirements. ULM TRIO ETS has been supporting students in the area for over 35 years.
