Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that Europe is in a “pre-war” era and in a situation “not seen since 1945.” He said the continent needed to step up defense investment given the continued threat from Russia and uncertainty over US support.
“Literally any scenario is possible,” Tusk said in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt published on March 29.
“I know this sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun – the pre-war era,” Tusk said, adding: Ta. It gets clearer every day. ”
Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine has become Europe’s biggest war since World War II, and some of Kiev’s Western allies constantly fear hostilities could spread beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Tusk’s comments came on the same day that Polish and other allied aircraft were scrambled in response to Russia’s massive missile attack on Ukraine.
In the previous attack on March 24, a Russian cruise missile entered Polish airspace for about 39 seconds. The Polish military said it did not shoot it down, citing the risk to local civilians.
“I don’t mean to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept of the past. It’s true, it started more than two years ago,” Tusk said.
“The most worrying thing right now is that literally any scenario could happen. We haven’t seen a situation like this since 1945.”
Mr Tusk used the interview to urge European allies to step up defense spending, saying the continent still had a “long way to go” and amid continued uncertainty over the European Union’s long-term commitments. He said it must be “independent, self-sufficient and self-defense.”America
The Polish prime minister also warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin could use the terrorist attack at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall earlier this month as a pretext to escalate attacks on Ukraine.

Even though there is no evidence of Ukrainian involvement and Islamic State bears responsibility for the attack earlier this month that killed 139 people, the Kremlin continues to try to link it to Kiev.
“President Putin has already started accusing Ukraine of preparing this attack, even though he has not presented any evidence,” Tusk said.
“Clearly he feels the need to justify increasingly violent attacks on civilian facilities in Ukraine.”
