Tuesday night’s Republican presidential primary became part of that. The contest had no impact on the selection of the party’s candidates, as it failed to win any delegates thanks to intraparty struggles. But if that were the case, “no one” would have received nearly twice as many delegates as former ambassador Nikki Haley. Haley is the only one of the two remaining candidates in the contest to appear on Nevada’s ballot.
In other words, more than 42,000 Nevada Republicans were found not to vote for Ms. Haley, but instead to vote in a meaningless race whose sole purpose was to “elect no one.” did. But in this case, those votes weren’t actually for “no one.” They were “no one on the ballot” or, more specifically, in support of Donald Trump.
Haley lost every county in the state. In fact, he won at least half of the votes cast for “Nobody”/imaginary Trump in every county. On average, “Nobody” received 7 out of 10 votes in Nevada counties. Hailey’s best county was Washoe, in the northwest corner of the state. There, he lost to no one by about the same margin he lost to Trump in New Hampshire.
In fact, New Hampshire provides an interesting analogy. On the Democratic side, President Biden did not appear on the ballot last month, giving his challengers, including Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), a chance to speak.
Instead, Biden supporters launched a write-in campaign that won nearly two-thirds of the president’s votes. Mr. Phillips, who actually campaigned, received only 20% of the vote.
The same thing happened in Nevada’s Republican primary. Haley did not commit significant resources to the state and received 31% of the vote instead of 20%. But she was busy with a seemingly grassroots effort to show her support for her front-runner. And as with Phillips, the result was a perplexing one that added to the question of why she was moving forward in the race.
How do we know that these “none of these candidates” votes are proxy votes for Mr. Trump? Now, just compare the Nevada primary to the New Hampshire primary. Instead, we can focus on one of the most consistent demographic indicators of support for Trump and pro-Trump candidates: education.
Of Nevada’s 17 counties, those with the highest percentage of residents with a high school diploma or less answered “none” by the widest margin. Counties with the highest percentages of college graduates gave Haley the most support.
Haley has vowed to stay in the race until his home state of South Carolina near the end of this month.He only has one contest left until then, Thursday in Nevada. caucus meeting There, state delegates will actually be awarded. Mr. Trump will clear that up and further separate Ms. Haley in the race for the party’s nomination. Perhaps Haley will stick around regardless.
That being said, I do need to point out what happened on Tuesday. It was understood that the contest was meaningless and had no direct impact on nominations. But it was also a moment when Trump supporters, the majority of the party as ever, sent Haley a subdued message.
I mean, we’re so devoted to President Trump that two of us are going to end up voting meaningless to everyone for all of your voters.
