Since being imprisoned in 2021, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has taken to social media to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and encourage anti-war protests across the country.

Reports of the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most high-profile critic signaled a halt to a crackdown on dissent in Russia that had accelerated during the war.

Here’s the latest information on Russia’s war in Ukraine:

The attack continues: At least five people have been killed and five others injured in Russian attacks in Ukraine’s Kharkiv, Kherson and Donetsk regions in the past 24 hours, local authorities said Friday.

Frontline battle: Ukraine’s 3rd Independent Assault Brigade said at least 15,000 enemy troops were fighting on the front lines in the town of Avdiivka in eastern Donetsk region. Russia has bombarded the city with airstrikes and artillery, while also launching waves of ground attacks by armored vehicles and soldiers. Ukraine’s new army commander Oleksandr Shirushkyi and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov visited soldiers on the front lines this week.

A senior U.S. defense official said Friday that Ukrainian forces fighting in Avdiivka are “short on critical supplies, especially ammunition.”

An uncertain future: A senior US defense official said Friday that unless Congress approves more funding for security assistance to Ukraine, the US will not be able to provide more air defense to Ukraine and more cities will be “bombed.” He issued a stern warning.

“We will see many more civilians die and Ukraine struggle to protect its critical infrastructure and front-line troops,” the official said of allowing the funding to lapse.

War expenses: A senior defense official told reporters Friday that the U.S. estimates the Ukraine war will cost Russia up to $211 billion in operational maintenance costs, with an expected loss of $1.3 trillion in economic growth. Ta.

All this adds to the human cost, officials said. Officials estimate Russian military casualties at 315,000. The official also said Ukrainian forces had “sunk, destroyed or damaged” at least 20 “medium-sized and large Russian Federation naval ships” and a Russian tanker in the Black Sea.

Agreement with Germany: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy secured new military aid in Berlin on Friday and signed a long-term security agreement with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The 10-year security pact promises Germany to support Ukraine with military aid, hit Russia with sanctions and export controls and keep Russian assets frozen.
