Imagine a madman breaking into your neighbor’s house, scavenging, looting, and setting it on fire while your neighbors watch.
Imagine the fear when you wonder where the madman will attack next and that your neighbors will just sit back and watch as he destroys your home.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that’s exactly how his country feels right now. Lithuania’s beautiful and ancient capital, Vilnius, is a close capital of the current disaster in Ukraine, and it has Landsbergis and his compatriots worried that their homeland could be the next place President Vladmir Putin invades. There’s a reason.
Rather than stand by and watch the mayhem unfold next door, Landsbergis is leading his country’s mission to shore up international support for Lithuania before looking for another country for the Russian beast to devour.
That’s why Landsbergis came to Pennsylvania last month. This is another sign of how important our country is on the national and world stage. In addition to visiting the State Capitol and meeting with Gov. Josh Shapiro, Mr. Landsbergis also took time to make friends with community leaders at a breakfast at the Harrisburg Civic Club and personally lend his support to Pennsylvanians. Appealed.
Landsbergis was wise to do so. America remains a democracy, even if threatened by vile attacks on election officials and judges. Democracy means elected officials at all levels must be concerned about voters and public opinion.
If enough Americans demand that Congress provide military and financial support to help Ukraine fight Russian aggression, Republican opposition will intensify and threaten World War III. may be able to stop it.
That’s not an exaggeration, folks. The future of our sons and daughters is at risk in Ukraine. Read books about World War II and talk to people who lived through it. Remember Hitler? History shows that madmen continue to find the courage to attack other countries. President Putin will be looking for the next country to take over. Lithuania is on the path to Putin rebuilding the Russian Empire and taking control of Europe.
However, there is one major difference between Lithuania and Ukraine. Lithuania is a NATO member, and an attack on one is an attack on all. If Russia were to invade the Baltic States, it would be as if both Europe and America were attacked. It’s not hard to imagine having to send US troops to Lithuania to keep President Putin out of Paris.
It is important to note that many European leaders are concerned about America’s commitment to remaining in NATO. They see Republican lawmakers blocking military aid to Ukraine and say former President Donald Trump is not a big supporter of the 75-year-old military alliance that kept peace in Europe after World War II. I’m worried that there won’t be any.
Some even fear that the second Trump administration will abolish America’s membership in NATO. That’s wrong. This is why countries like Lithuania are concerned.
With President Putin right next door, Lithuanians are understandably worried that their American friends will just watch their houses burn down like they did in Ukraine.
