TL;DR
- Apple is reportedly considering a foldable iPad, but has not been able to create a wrinkle-free foldable display.
- It is believed that the company may abandon the concept if it is unable to resolve the wrinkles in the display.
We’ve been seeing reports for a while that Apple is working on a foldable iPad. But now it looks like Apple may retire the device if it can’t resolve the flip phone’s key hurdles.
bloomberg Journalist Mark Garman claimed in the Power On newsletter that Apple is indeed researching a foldable iPad. However, the journalist added that phone manufacturers have not yet found a way to create foldable screens without creases.
Garman’s sources say Apple could abandon the foldable iPad altogether if it can’t offer a wrinkle-free experience. The journalist pointed out that there is still time for Apple to address this issue. After all, South Korean news outlets recently reported that his foldable Apple device is expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. The news outlet also claimed that Apple is having trouble making foldable screens that are wrinkle-free.
All foldable smartphones on the market today have a display crease, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold (see above). However, these grooves are smaller, and our review praised how shallow the OnePlus Open’s creases are. So there’s a good chance we’ll see wrinkle-free foldable screens within the next few years.
I’ll also be interested to see if Apple can address some of the other issues with current foldable phones, such as the lack of dust protection and the cheapness of foldable screens.
