I no longer wear my smartwatch to bed

In this weekly column, Android Central Wearables Editor Michael Hicks talks about the world of wearables, apps, and fitness technology related to running and health in his quest to get faster and fitter.

A smart ring is not a replacement for a smartwatch. It can’t have all the sensors, haptics, and other components needed for apps, notifications, and calls. That aside, I’m skeptical that the smart ring will match the watch when it comes to step count and workout data. But what about sleep tracking?can not see Anyone I have continued to wear my smartwatch even after trying the smart ring for the first time.

I’ve been testing the Ultrahuman Ring Air for a little over a week now, and so far I really like its sleep tracking features. But my newfound belief isn’t about any particular brand. It can also be easily applied to the Oura Ring Gen 3, which is a favorite of several of my colleagues, as well as the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Ring. What matters is the form factor.

My Ultrahuman Ring Air weighs approximately 3 grams/0.1 oz, while Oura’s rings range from 4 grams to 6 grams depending on ring size. The weight of the next Galaxy Ring is clearly 2.3 to 2.9g, making it the lightweight champion.

For a wrist-based wearable, even one as small as a pebble like the Fitbit Charge 6 weighs 30g/1oz, mainly due to the strap. Switching to a proper smartwatch can add two to three times the weight, especially if you add stainless steel or titanium materials.

During the day, you can ignore the weight of your smartwatch and how it feels on your skin. However, as the night approaches, its presence feels oppressive, as if I were wearing regular clothes to bed.

I know I’m in the minority. In his 2022 poll conducted by Android Central, 67% of readers “usually” wear their smartwatches to bed, compared to 21% of readers who “never” wear them. was. But for me, that was the worst part of it all. Our smartwatch reviews say you’ll need to test the sleep tracking features to determine its value for most people.

So you miss out on all the great features and health data that fitness watches have to offer. The watch I use every day is a Garmin Forerunner 965, but since I don’t wear it to bed, it doesn’t show proper Body Battery data (sleep energy recharge) or HRV status (stress and workout recovery levels). yeah.

It’s not just about comfort. For best results, your smartwatch band should fit perfectly. If it’s too tight, it will restrict blood flow and mess up your actual heart rate and blood oxygen results. If it is too loose, not all pulses will be detected and the measurement will be unstable. Even if you wear it correctly the first time, all it takes is a pillow or your weight to move your smartwatch in the wrong direction, and suddenly your data is cut out for hours at a time.

Case in point, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 proved to be reasonably accurate for daytime heart rate data, but during our review we found some very misleading data for blood oxygen and skin temperature. It was done.

Ultra Human Ring Air really feels like it melts into your skin. The problem with tactile hypersensitivity (or whatever the official psychology term is) that I’ve always had is no longer the case.

Now, when you wake up, you can check your sleep time, time in each sleep zone, average and resting heart rate, skin temperature, heart rate variability, heart rate drop time, blood oxygen average, restlessness, and other key features. Most of the elements are now visible. required data. The exception is atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection, which I don’t think any smart ring brand offers yet.

Of course, even if you choose a smart ring, if it’s too tight or too loose, the readings can be inaccurate. However, since you can purchase them in most ring sizes, this is rarely a problem.

When worn properly, a smart ring will rest against your skin for most of your finger, even when pressed hard against a pillow or mattress while you sleep. Much better than a smartwatch. The exception is during workouts. At this time, the finger naturally swells due to increased blood flow, which appears to disrupt heart rate results.

Now that I’m wearing a smart ring, I can justify going to bed late or drinking a can of High Noon because I know the little metal chunks will alert me to a lack of recharge in my sleep or a drop in heart rate variability the next day. It has become much more difficult to do. I hope it helps you establish better habits in the long run.

If you’re already happy with your smartwatch, you can save the $300 cost of a typical smart ring and enjoy its sleep tracking features. I’m happy!

For people like me, who are in the minority who can’t stand the weight, sweat and dirt buildup, wrist swelling, and the feeling of something pressing hard against your skin all night, smart rings are perfect. your solution. Get the health and energy data you missed before without any discomfort.

The downside of smart rings is what I mentioned at the beginning. Smart Ring is not intended to replace an Android watch or Apple Watch for smarter apps, or a fitness watch for metrics or GPS. But if you’re the kind of techie who can afford to add a smart ring to your device category, I highly recommend it.
