Hunter Biden declines invitation to testify before House committee

Hunter Biden will appear at a House Oversight Committee hearing next week, according to a letter from Biden’s attorney Abby Rowell to the committee’s chairman, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.). He reportedly declined an invitation to testify.

Comer said in a statement Wednesday that Hunter Biden “has said for months that he wanted to hold a hearing, and along with business associates he has worked with over the years, he has been unable to hold a hearing. “I am refusing to attend because it was proposed to me,” he complained.

Biden took private depositions before the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees last month after weeks of back-and-forth with Republicans over offering to testify publicly or appear in public depositions instead. .

In fact, during a closed-door deposition, the president’s son sharply refuted allegations that his father was involved in his business. Hunter Biden testified for nearly seven hours and said his father did not receive money or benefit financially from his business, according to a transcript of his testimony.

After the private meeting, Comer said the next step in the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Biden will be a public hearing.

In his letter to Comer, Lowell insisted that the younger Biden answered all questions from Republicans in his deposition and said the hearings were “not a serious oversight proceeding.”

“This is your attempt to revive the conference’s moribund investigation with a circus act for the right-wing media,” Rowell wrote.

House Republicans have long struggled to prove that President Biden improperly profited from his family’s businesses as part of their impeachment inquiry. Some members of the council have also expressed skepticism about the study.

Hunter Biden testified during a closed-door deposition that he never introduced or involved his father in any transactions with a Chinese energy company he worked for in 2017. He also defended his close relationship with his father and clarified that he never called his father. Father on behalf of the client.

Lowell said in a Wednesday letter to Comer that Hunter Biden will be unable to attend the hearing because he has a court hearing in California the next day, but the scheduling conflict is “not in question” regarding the invitation. “It’s the smallest in the world,” he said.

“The blatant event planned for the media was not proper proceedings, but a clear attempt to throw a Hail Mary pass after the game ended,” Lowell wrote. He also quoted Comer as saying on Jan. 10 that all the committee needs is “people to show up for depositions and we’ll get this together.”

“Mr. Biden did what you asked,” Lowell said.

Comer said in a statement Wednesday that Hunter Biden “identified significant evidence” during his deposition, but that some of his testimony was based on former colleagues Devon Archer, Jason Galanis and Tony Biden. He claimed that this contradicted Bobulinski’s testimony.

“Next week’s hearing with Hunter Biden and his associates is moving forward and we fully expect Hunter Biden to participate,” Comer said.
