Google made some big changes to its ChatGPT rival late last week, and they’re all for the better. The Bard branding has been discontinued and has now been replaced by Google Gemini. Duet AI will also be known as Gemini within Google’s productivity apps. Then there’s Gemini Advanced, which is the new ChatGPT Plus equivalent. But Google bundles its best AI into its Google One cloud storage product, so your $20 subscription also comes with 2TB of data.
When enabled, Google Gemini will replace Google Assistant on your Android phone. On iPhone, Siri is the default virtual assistant, but there’s no dedicated Google Gemini app yet. However, Gemini is probably already hiding on your iPhone right now in the Google app. I found it incredibly easy to get Gemini up and running on my iPhone.
The Google app lets you search online on your iPhone. This includes Google Lens search and voice search. It makes sense that Google Gemini would also be bundled with the app. However, I think the standalone Gemini app for iOS would work even better.
The default version of Gemini is available for free. You don’t need to upgrade to the most expensive Google One cloud storage plan to access Gemini.
Gemini is in the Google app on your iPhone
To use Gemini, you need to sign in to your Google account. This means you can’t use Gemini without an account or in incognito mode.
To start using Gemini on your iPhone, simply load the Google app after making sure you’re running the latest version. If Gemini is deployed to your account, you’ll see a tab at the top of the app, as shown in the screenshot below. You can use this toggle to switch between regular Google Search and Gemini.
You can’t miss it. The Google Search tab displays the word “Search” next to the Google logo. Google Gemini tabs are marked with a blue star.
To get started, you’ll need to agree to the terms of service where Google will collect all your Google Gemini data to improve its AI models. More on that later.
Once you agree, you’ll be able to chat with Google Gemini on your iPhone using your keyboard or voice. Just tap the appropriate icon to get started.
You can also upload images for multimodal chat with Google.
Privacy considerations
You can’t use Google Gemini on your iPhone unless you consent to Google’s data collection. Here’s what Gemini tells you about it during setup on your iPhone.
Save chats and related data, including location and contextual information, in Gemini Activity. Google uses your data to improve its services and technology, with the help of human reviewers. Human-reviewed data is removed from your account and stored for three years. Don’t enter anything you don’t want seen or used.
Additionally, it says that if you don’t want Google to use Gemini Activities to improve Gemini, you can turn them off. Data is stored for 72 hours to ensure security and reliability. You can stop Gemini app activity collection by visiting this link in your Google Account.

As I said before, there’s no way to replace Siri with the Google Gemini assistant on your iPhone. A twist on this is the action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.
You can quickly access Google Gemini by setting an action button to open the Google app on your iPhone. If you plan on using Gemini on your iPhone often, this shortcut might be worth considering.
