How to turn on ultra-wideband (UWB) functionality on your phone

Due to the growing popularity of Apple AirTags, Android smartphone manufacturers are starting to adopt UWB (Ultra Wideband) technology in their flagship products. UWB enables near field communication for precise location tracking, keyless car entry, data transfer, and other features on compatible Android smartphones. UWB is not available on low-end Android smartphones. However, it is included in Google Pixel Pro devices and high-end Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

UWB was developed as a protocol for transferring data. Its ability to detect and track nearby objects has become essential to modern devices and cars. Apple uses the same technology with its AirTags, and automakers such as BMW, Audi, Ford, and Hyundai are using his UWB to enable digital car keys in their latest models. Let’s activate it on your Android smartphone.

In addition to unlocking your car and communicating with nearby devices, your Samsung phone’s UWB can find your Galaxy SmartTag+. The latest Galaxy smartphones come with a “Search using camera” feature that uses the rear camera to navigate your device. When your phone matches the direction of his SmartTag+, a search using the camera will be triggered.

Why do I need to enable UWB on Android?

There are several reasons to turn on UWB on your Android smartphone. Let’s take a look.

  • Keyless car entry: With a UWB-enabled phone, you don’t have to pull out your device or hover over your car’s steering wheel to unlock it. If you keep your phone in your pocket, you can immediately have his UWB authenticate your ID.
  • Device tracking: Attach smart trackers like the Galaxy SmartTag to your wallet, pet, or bike to track their exact location in real time.
  • Smart home automation: This is another area where UWB has potential. When it detects a mobile phone in her pocket, the house can automatically unlock via her UWB. Smart devices such as fans, air conditioners, and lights can also communicate once they enter a room. The possibilities are endless.

Apart from the smartphone-focused scenario mentioned above, UWB technology is used in manufacturing and logistics to track items in warehouses and factories. The NFL (National Football League) also uses his UWB technology to track player locations and obtain statistics.

Using UWB on Android: Requirements

You cannot enable UWB on your phone and start managing your smart home products or car. To see UWB working, you need one of the following:

  • Compatible smart home products that support UWB.
  • UWB-powered smart trackers like the Galaxy SmartTag+.
  • A new vehicle compatible with UWB. You may need to set up an Android digital key in your car manufacturer’s app.

Although UWB is limited to a few flagship Android smartphones, we expect the latest technology to make its way to budget devices soon. UWB currently has limited avatar functionality due to the small collection of compatible devices. The technology will gain further traction as UWB-compatible smart home devices, smart trackers, and cars that support digital keys emerge.
