How to take a long screenshot on your iPhone and save it to Photos

Taking a screenshot on your iPhone is easy: just quickly press the Volume + and Side button combination. If your hands are full, you can also ask Siri to take a screenshot for you. But sometimes you need a longer screenshot that shows more information than what’s on the screen. That’s where scrolling screenshots come in.

In addition to standard screenshots using the button combinations mentioned above, your iPhone can take full-page screenshots, which let you capture more of a web page, PDF file, or whatever lengthy thing you’re trying to snap. But there are some guardrails you need to be aware of to make sure your screenshots save the way you want them. We’ll explain.

For the more tech-savvy among you, here’s what to expect at WWDC 2024 and the most annoying iOS 17 settings you should change now.

Belkin UltraGlass Screen Protectors help protect your iPhone screen from scratches, cracks and breakage. They’re twice as strong as typical tempered glass protectors and can withstand drops twice as high.

What is a scrolling screenshot?

A full-page, or scrolling, screenshot captures an entire page, such as a webpage, document, or email, without having to take multiple screenshots and stitch them together. For example, if you want to take a screenshot of a 116-page document in Safari, you only need to take a single screenshot to capture the entire thing.

To take a scrolling screenshot, follow these steps:

2. Tap Screenshot Preview It’ll appear in the bottom left corner, and it’ll only be there for about five seconds, so you’ll have to act a little quick.

3. next, Full Page OptionsBelow the full page, you’ll see a preview of the entire scrolling screenshot on the right and a larger preview in the center. If your scrolling screenshot is too long, there’s also a tool to crop it.

Four. Once you have finished editing your scrolling screenshot, strike endYou will be given two options, one to save the scrolling screenshot and one to delete it.

Five. Finally tap Save PDF to file or Save to Photos Saves a scrolling screenshot (if available).

If you save the screenshot to a file, you’ll need to choose a folder to save it to – by default, the Files app will choose the last folder you saved something to or your Downloads folder.

Long screenshots can be saved to Photos (in some cases)

Before iOS 17, long screenshots could only be saved as PDF files. This is still true depending on the length of the screenshot.

The easiest way to check if you can save scrolling screenshots to your photo reel is to follow step 4 above and check. The option to save screenshot to photos will either be there or it won’t. Another way to check is to look at the screen summary on the right after tapping the Full Page Screenshot option.

If the length of the screenshot exceeds the length of your phone’s screen, as in the CNET homepage example above, you can only save it as a PDF. If it doesn’t, as in the Google search example above, you should be able to save it to Photos. Apple’s support page doesn’t define the exact parameters, but this is a good guide.

How to take long screenshots on iPhone

As mentioned above, very long screenshots will automatically be converted to PDF and saved in the native Files app. To view a scrolling screenshot, open the Files app, navigate to the folder where your screenshots are saved, and tap on the screenshot.

From here you can rename the file, draw on it, leave comments, etc. You can also share a scrolling screenshot, but the other person will need to have Files or another PDF reader to view it.

If you saved the screenshot to the Photos app, you’ll be able to find it there.
