The web doesn’t have to be fixed and static. With the right tools, you can type and doodle on the websites you visit, adding all kinds of annotations for all kinds of purposes. Maybe you want to keep notes for yourself, or maybe you’re working on a project with someone and need to leave notes on a page.
How to do this varies by browser. This is not difficult to do with most popular browsers, but will likely require a third-party add-on. The only browser that’s really left behind is Apple Safari. Apple Safari doesn’t offer native annotation tools or good extensions (at least not on the desktop, which is the focus here).
google chrome
Annotations are not a built-in feature of Google Chrome, but there are many third-party extensions that can add functionality. One of our favorites is simply called Annotate. Install the extension, sign up for a free account, and you’re good to go. As you navigate the web, you’ll see a floating annotation icon on the right side of your browser window that you can click to display annotation tools.
You can also doodle on top of web pages, add text, and temporarily highlight certain sections. It’s perfect for doing real-time presentations, as it has basic presentation tools built-in and the ability to save pages for later use. If you want more tools (like shapes) or longer presentation times (12 minutes or more), you can get a Pro account for $35 per year.
A great screen recorder and screenshots are also worth mentioning. As the name suggests, this is first and foremost a screenshot tool, but once you have an image of your website, you can easily annotate it in a variety of ways. Once you’ve captured part or parts of an image, you can jump to the annotation workspace with just a few clicks. There you can play with tools such as pens, text boxes, and shapes.
Similar to Annotate, Awesome Screen Recorder & Screenshot has some simple presentation tools built-in, including stickers, callout boxes, watermarks, and more, with premium subscription plans (starting at $5/month) for more tools. ) are available. A small amount of cloud storage space is also available for free, making it easy to sync your annotated website grabs across devices.
microsoft edge
Microsoft Edge gets full marks for its integrated native annotation tools. If you use Edge, you don’t need to rely on third-party extension tools. However, this tool is not as advanced as individual add-ons, so you may end up needing some extra help.
Website annotation tools are connected to screenshot functionality. It includes a lot of features for free, but you can get additional features like watermark options for $5 per month.
Mozilla Firefox
Like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox doesn’t have native website annotation features, but you can find some third-party extensions that work instead. Of all the ones I’ve seen so far, Zoho Annotator stands out. Click on the extension icon in the toolbar and select which part of his current website you would like to retrieve, and you will be taken directly to the annotation screen.
All the main tools you might need are included here, allowing you to add shapes, lines, text, and arrows on top of the page you grab. Once you’re done, you can easily copy the resulting file to your clipboard, save it to disk, or share it with other apps. The add-on is completely free to use and you don’t even need to register an account.
Another similar tool worth noting is Memex. It’s primarily designed to help with research projects (though you can actually use it for anything you like). The focus here is on selecting sections of the website, adding comments, and sharing them with other users. This is similar to collaborating on a document with multiple people on the web.
This extension allows you to save web pages to several custom spaces, pull out specific sections from the page, and add images and comments to them. It also supports videos, PDFs, and social media posts, making it a comprehensive and sophisticated tool. You can save up to 25 pages per month for free, but after that you’ll have to pay for a premium package starting at $6 per month.
