- You can switch back from Gemini to Google Assistant by changing the default digital assistant app in Settings.
Google Bard has been replaced by Gemini, the company’s latest and greatest AI tool. This is more than just a chatbot. Eventually, Gemini will replace his Google Assistant on his Android, but there’s no need to wait to try it out for yourself right now. Learn how to get started.
Gemini isn’t just a rebranded version of Bard. It’s actually a combination of Bard and Duet AI, now known as “Gemini Prio 1.0.” Not only can Gemini perform text-based tasks that reportedly outperform GPT-4, but it also has image generation capabilities comparable to DALL-E. You can access Gemini Advanced by paying $20 per month.
Gemini and Google Assistant cannot be used separately on Android. Once you agree to use Gemini, Gemini will replace your assistant on your device. You can switch back to Assistant if you want, but then you won’t be able to use the Gemini app.
How to install Google Gemini AI on Android
First, we’ll show you how to easily install the Gemini app and get it up and running. To do this, just download the official app from the Google Play Store.
To start using Gemini, accept the terms. You’ll see that Gemini has opted in to “act as your new assistant on this phone.”
If Google Assistant is already set as your default Assistant app, Gemini will automatically replace it. To check this, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Digital Assistant App. Select “Google”.
Now, say “Ok Google, long press the power button or swipe in from the bottom corner of the screen to launch Gemini. However, you may notice that Assistant still ‘helps’ you with some actions. I don’t know.
Please note that this is not a replacement for Google Assistant on other devices. For example, smart speakers and displays will still use Assistant.
How to switch back from Gemini to Google Assistant
If you’ve tried Gemini but aren’t ready to use it full-time, you can easily switch back to using Google Assistant as your default digital assistant app.
First, open the Gemini app and tap on the profile icon in the top corner. Select “Settings” from the menu.
Scroll down and select Google’s Digital Assistant.
Select Google Assistant and tap Switch at the next prompt to confirm.
Now, Google Assistant will be used when you say, “Hey Google, press and hold the power button or swipe in from the bottom corner of the screen.”
It’s a little annoying that Google doesn’t allow you to use Gemini as a standalone app and leave Assistant as your default digital assistant. Thankfully, it’s very easy to switch back if you don’t like Gemini, and it relies on the Assistant for many actions anyway.
