Last May, before a formal investigation began, House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) joined with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to investigate bribery charges against the president and Hunter Biden. I raised it. There was no evidence to support this claim, and some evidence to the contrary. Last month, the accuser was indicted on false charges by the Justice Department.
But most of Comer’s efforts focused on trying to show that Joe Biden was involved in his son’s business. Hunter Biden himself testified behind closed doors last week, denying each of the allegations, according to the record. Comer’s entirely circumstantial case was even more chilling.
This is a problem. Republicans and Mr. Comer in particular were able to convince Republican voters that the investigation was a success and that they had found the real problem. However, as many members of Congress have pointed out, he was not actually impeached. That means the chances of actually impeaching Biden are decreasing.
In other words, Comer is doing the same thing he does when a hustle falls apart. He is doubling down.
On Wednesday night, he appeared on Sean Hannity’s FOX News show and reassured FOX viewers that all efforts to hold the president accountable are on track. (It’s no surprise that Hannity would host such an effort; he was an early investor in this political pyramid scheme and is as committed as anyone to keeping it moving forward.) His argument What? Hunter Biden makes a gaffe and the Republicans are poised to go on the offensive.
Hannity first asked Comer how Hunter Biden’s deposition went.
“In the first hour, we asked a lot of questions. We asked substantive questions about certain transactions that the president’s son had with some of these shady LLCs, and we put them on the record,” Comer said. Ta.
Republicans questioned Hunter Biden about several transactions, records show. Biden noted that some of them involved legal entities (LLCs) that were not his own. At no point did the interrogation clearly reveal any wrongdoing on the part of Hunter Biden, much less his father.
But notice how Comer frames his argument. He asked about “shady LLCs.” He wants questions. As the Washington Post’s fact checkers wrote in August (before the impeachment inquiry began, mind you), these LLCs weren’t actually “shady” to begin with.
Comer took a moment to belittle questions from Democrats before continuing.
“What we discovered, Sean, believe it or not, was that his answers were very different from the answers of his colleagues when asked the same question,” he said, “and the question revolved around Joe Biden’s involvement.”
It alleges that investigators have spoken to Hunter Biden and former colleagues who have criticized his work, which Biden has refused to do. But Comer did not clarify what those discrepancies were, instead using them as a basis for arguing for a hearing involving Hunter Biden and others.
Comer said he would insist on holding such a hearing soon after Hunter Biden’s deposition, a change from previous statements that the hearing would be useless. (A meeting held in September did not go well for Comer and his allies.) This is part of the escalation: Oh, you think Hunter Biden rejected our efforts? mistaken! Now we’re taking things up a notch!
Have you ever seen the episode of “Seinfeld” where George Costanza tries to convince his deceased fiancee’s parents that they have a house on Long Island? We’re in the impeachment phase. Mr. Comer is making up the name of a horse waiting for Fox News viewers in Montauk.
Mr. Hannity told Mr. Comer that he had heard there was talk of issuing a criminal referral to the Justice Department. This is legally equivalent to reporting to the police. Comer enthusiastically confirmed the report.
“We found a lot of fraud. We found a lot of criminal activity involved and multiple people involved in these schemes,” he said. “So we’re going to do everything we can to hold them accountable.”
Apparently, once the inquiry is issued, we will know what constitutes this criminal activity. At this point, it’s unclear what Comer is referring to other than what Hunter Biden has already been charged with. But it escalates again. Just wait until you see how spacious the inside of this seaside cottage is!
Comer added: “If Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice doesn’t take potential criminal charges seriously, perhaps the next president with a new attorney general will.”
There’s a hint in a line Donald Trump often uses, as when Comer continued to criticize America’s “two-tiered justice system.” This is closely related to President Trump and the 2024 election. We also provide additional cover. If the Justice Department thinks this inquiry is strange, that’s its fault, not Comer’s.
This brings us to the most thought-provoking part of Mr. Comer’s discussion with Mr. Hannity: his declaration that those in government need to be held accountable, too.
“The Bidens are being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Internal Revenue Service, the FBI, and multiple U.S. attorneys in multiple districts within the Department of Justice,” he complained. “But still nothing happened.”
Now, again, Hunter Biden has been indicted multiple times, and the only known investigation into his father, one that dealt with classified documents, resulted in only political punishment.
However, an outside observer may see this from another direction. So you’re saying that multiple law enforcement agencies and officials investigated the activities of Hunter and James Biden, but no charges were brought? But a piecemeal investigation led by partisans who sent a cable in late 2022 confirming Joe Biden’s guilt has stalled a major lead when the accuser was found to have fabricated the charges. . This investigation was successful in identifying the following crimes: Did government investigators miss it?
Understood. Once at the cottage, take Prickly Pete for a trot along the beach.
