Google may have found a way to protect Android device users from OTP-related scams and scams. At its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2024, held this week, the company announced stronger protections against fraud and fraud coming to Android 15.

“Android 15 also provides additional protections to fight scams and scams with two important enhancements to help protect your information and privacy from malicious apps,” the company said. It added that it is working on new AI-powered protections. scam.

Protect OTP from malware: With the exception of a few types of apps, such as wearable companion apps, OTP is hidden from notifications, blocking a common attack vector for fraud and spyware.

Extended limited settings: To protect sensitive permissions commonly exploited by fraudsters, the company is expanding on the Restricted Settings feature introduced in Android 13.

If you’re using Android 15, you must provide additional user approval to enable permissions when you install apps from internet sideloading sources such as web browsers, messaging apps, and file managers. .

Protection against screen sharing social engineering attacks The company is also increasing controls for screen sharing in Android 15 to limit social engineering attacks that attempt to view your screen and steal information.

Auto-hidden notifications and OTPs: When a user shares their screen, private notification content is hidden and remote viewers cannot see the user’s notification details.

“Apps that post OTPs in notifications are automatically protected from remote viewers when you share your screen, helping to thwart attempts to steal sensitive data,” Google said.

Additionally, the screen on devices running Android 15 is hidden when users enter credentials such as username, password, or credit card number during a screen sharing session.

Currently available on Pixel and rolling out to other Android devices soon, users will be able to share only the content of one app instead of their entire screen to protect screen privacy.
