How (and why you should) use Android’s “Photomoji” feature in Google Messages

Emoji have become a language unto themselves. I don’t speak this language fluently, but I understand it. Using simple images to quickly respond to text and convey your thoughts and feelings can be a fairly effective means of communication.

I usually only use emojis for certain people (mainly my wife), but sometimes I find that Android doesn’t have the perfect little image to convey my particular condition. That’s why when Google announced the Photomoji feature for Android, I thought, “This could be useful.”

Photomojis are not only useful, they’re actually a lot of fun. You can scroll through your photo collection, find an interesting image (with a salient subject), and create an emoji based on that photo. Surprisingly, the system running this feature is very good at recognizing the subject and removing everything else from the photo to create an emoji.

The only caveat is that the emojis tend to be a little larger than average, so if you’re expecting cute little emojis from a full-size camera photo, you’ll be disappointed. Still, this feature is fun and worth a try.

Besides, how else are you going to create cat or spouse emojis? Let’s see how this new feature works.

How to create a photomoji

Things necessary: Photomoji functionality requires a device running the latest Android 14 update. Of course, you’ll also need a few photos to use as sources.

Ready to create?

Launch Google Messages and open the chat thread where you want to send your first Photomoji (make sure the recipient is someone who can consent to testing this feature).

Tap the little smiley face on the left edge of the text message bar to open the emoji options.

on the left side of the tab bar[Photomoji]A tab will appear. (If not, you’ve either upgraded your Android or you’re using a version that doesn’t support the Photomoji feature.) Tap that tab.

Once you select a photo, Android’s AI will work to crop everything but the subject from the photo. If you like what you see, click the link associated with the image.[送信]Tap the button and the photomoji will be delivered to the recipient’s inbox. New Photomoji are also saved to your collection for later use.

That’s all you need to know to use Android’s new Photomoji feature. This fun addition to texting won’t make your communication more efficient, secure, or intelligent, but it will definitely make it unique for you.
