How an iPhone and a CO2 machine helped solve a Portland home robbery

PORTLAND, Ore. — iPhones, carbon ejectors and surveillance cameras all helped solve a Portland home robbery.

Xu Ju Wang and Mike Coleman, who live in the West Portland Park neighborhood, are living out of a hotel after trees crushed their home during this month’s winter storm. On my way back to retrieve my items, I quickly realized that my cello, electronics, and jewelry were all gone.

“(My husband) noticed right away that things were missing,” Wang said. She said: “I noticed all the drawers were open and things were being moved around.”

About a week later, Wang said he got a CO2 monitor from the house and the history log showed someone had been inside during their absence.

“You can download historical data,” Wang said of the monitors he purchased during the pandemic. “The meter is so sensitive that it can sense when a cat comes into the room, so it’s like picking up our breath.”

After telling people about the robbery, they discovered that their neighbors had been recording the road with their surveillance cameras.

“Then I remembered last Thursday, I saw two guys walking down the street who didn’t fit in,” neighbor James Taber recalled. “Our streets were covered in ice. You can’t check on houses and things like that and just walk around casually, but it obviously covered the houses.”

That same night, the couple started receiving “Find My iPhone” alerts. They used surveillance video and notifications to track the Apple products to Tigard’s apartment.

“I drove up there to see if the pickup truck was there, and lo and behold, when I pulled up to his apartment, he passed me, so I got the exact I found the apartment,” Taber said.

After taking photos and collecting all the evidence, the couple went to Portland police, obtained a search warrant, and arrested 54-year-old Jack Kowalski.

Shu-Ju Wang said her cello and electronics were returned, but some of her more expensive jewelry remained missing.

“It’s very unfortunate that we lost some of these physical things, but I still just think, ‘Wow, we’re so lucky,'” she said.
