Kahlil Greene, a self-described “Gen Z historian” whose TikTok videos about Black history have more than 640,000 followers, told CNN on Wednesday that the House vote will involve more people than ever before in this country’s history. He said there are some echoes of dark times.
In an interview, Green compared efforts to crack down on foreign-owned apps to the Red Scares of the 1940s and 1950s, when widespread Americans were exposed to government charges amid fears of communist infiltration.
“Censorship under a national security threat seems like a very uncomfortable area,” he said, adding, “Whether it’s the Patriot Act or the Patriot Act, censorship would undermine American freedom. You can often actually take away “red hunting.” Communist groups and foreign groups have inherited this idea. ”
Greene said the U.S. government has not been sufficiently convincing about the need for restrictions specifically targeting TikTok and has not developed a solution that protects the constitutional rights of Americans.
“I’m really concerned about governments banning TikTok, especially in an election year,” he said. “It’s also hypocritical, especially when governments use TikTok so often and for election campaign purposes. TikTok can be used when it benefits the U.S. government, but it begins to generate dissent and innovative public opinion on issues that are entrenched in American politics.
