The Hottern Hell Hundred Bicycle Race in Wichita Falls has been named the “Best Road Cycling Event of 2024” by USA Today.
The nod was part of the publication’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
USA Today reported that the race, held annually near the end of summer, is one of the oldest and largest cycling events in the country.
“You may have to be a little angry to attempt an endurance ride that lives up to its hype as ‘Hell’s Wheels,’ a 160-mile ride in 100-degree August heat,” the magazine said Wednesday. He said this when announcing the winner.
Finish Line Village, a traditional spaghetti dinner and breakfast buffet, was also mentioned.
Hotter’N Hell tops a list of 10 finalists, which also includes the TD Five Boro Bike Tour in New York City, America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe, and El Tour de Tucson in Arizona .
USA Today’s travel experts selected the top 20 picks in a variety of categories, including dining, lodging, destinations, travel gear, and activities. Readers then voted to determine the winner.
“We’re very pleased,” said Chip Filer, executive director of HHH. “This is a credit to the Wichita Falls community. As I’ve said many times, this ride belongs to the community.”
Filer said the event required the efforts of nearly 4,000 people.
