Horizon Science Academy in Lorain, 760 Tower Blvd., has unveiled renovation plans to better serve students, said Jessica Varner, business manager and community engagement coordinator.
Founded in 2009, the charter school is located in the building that once housed Loran Catholic High School.
Verner said Horizon Science Academy will use the former swimming pool area on campus.
“January marks the beginning of an exciting chapter. The Horizon Academy of Sciences in Lorrain proudly begins work on an innovative construction project,” she said. “This area, which was previously the Lorain Catholic Church pool, will undergo an amazing transformation into a transsexual gym and cafeteria area, a dynamic addition that promises to enhance our school experience.”
The school currently has over 800 students enrolled.
Selahaddin Arifoglu, Horizon’s vice principal for operations, said the renovation will open new areas within the building and provide a variety of purposes for students.
“That area will be half cafeteria, half gym and will also function as an event space,” Arifoglu said. “We will also add three classrooms.”
The pool area has not been used since the 1990s, when Lorrain Catholic was still open.
When Horizon took over in 2009, crews zoned that area of the building and then created a long-term plan for how it would be used, Varner said.
The pool space is huge, she said.
“This area is huge,” Berner said. “When the pool still existed, I think it was an Olympic-sized pool.
“So the area is huge, but this pool hasn’t been built since the ’90s when (Lorand Catholic Church) was still using it as a recreation center.”
Verner said Horizon’s student population has increased rapidly since the school opened.
Initially, the school started with about 100 students.
In addition to adding an event center, the renovations will also add much-needed classroom space and other amenities for students, Berner said.
“The (extra) space just gives the kids more space,” she said. “More opportunities for children to take advantage of will only strengthen our education.
“We already have a gym, so this will be another gym. We’re just upgrading our teaching space and offering more.”
Arifoglu said the construction phase of the project has begun.
He said the goal is to complete the project by the beginning of the 2024-25 school year.
