PAOK and Olympiakos made a historic comeback from their poor performance a week ago, winning the return leg game on Thursday and advancing to the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League. This season was a rare night of glory for Greek football in Europe.
PAOK defeated Dinamo Zagreb 5-1 in Tuumba, overturning a 2-0 deficit from seven nights earlier.
The Thessaloniki team had already secured a 3-0 score in the first half with goals from Abdul Baba Rahman, Brandon Thomas and an own goal from Petar Sučić.
Dynamo pulled one back early in the second half with a goal from Abel Hoxha, but they were unable to keep the Greeks at bay and Kostas Kourielakis and Andrija Zivković scored again for the famous result.
After losing 4-1 at home to Maccabi Tel Aviv, Olympiakos made another remarkable comeback with a 6-1 win in extra time away in Serbia.
Like PAOK, Olympiakos led 3-0 at half-time thanks to performances from Daniel Podence, Kostas Fortunis and Ayoub El Kaabi.
El Kaabi restored the Reds’ three-goal lead on the night, although Elan Zahavi’s penalty temporarily reduced the arrears for the hosts, who played their home game in Bacca Topola.
After 90 minutes, the final score was 4-1 and the match went into extra time, with Olympiakos gaining the upper hand. Sasa Jovetic and Youssef El-Arabi were on target as the Reds secured a place in the last eight.
The draw for the Conference League quarterfinals will be held on Friday.
