Welcome to the 523rd edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here we discuss the latest mobile news and take a closer look at some of the most interesting new apps and games. Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of last week’s biggest highlights.
- Google Pay appears to be following in the Dodo’s footsteps by completely replacing Google Wallet. Google has announced that the app will be discontinued, and will be completely unavailable after June 4th of this year. Users can still check their balances and send money using the Google Pay website.
- Google this week announced a new AI model named Gemma. The new open source AI model is not as full-fledged as Gemini, but it’s perfect for small, lightweight projects.
- Recently, after introducing the Gemini app as an opt-in download, Google started phasing out Assistant by default. Gemini appears when you download the Assistant app, so you have to manually switch it back.
- Google Messages may soon be getting new camera effects, as confirmed by several flags recently discovered within the app. This isn’t the only change in the works, Google may also be experimenting with removing top contacts during searches and other smaller changes.
- Google is testing a new AI feature called App Highlights in the Play Store. This new feature summarizes the important points about the app, eliminating redundant explanations and making it easier to understand the essence of what the app has to offer. For now, this feature is still only available to a lucky few users.
- Android Authority’s latest APK teardown of Snapchat shows that the company is working on a new feature called Tiny Snaps. In other words, this feature allows you to record small snaps while receiving messages. There is no official information about this feature, but the idea seems to be to capture the user’s reaction when typing a new message.
- This week Google revealed an overview of how Assistant AI will work in Android Auto-enabled vehicles. This new feature summarizes both group chats and individual texts in his 40+ words, giving you more to-the-point messages that you can easily respond to with your voice.
Android App Weekly: New Apps and Games
Looking for a new Android app or game to immerse yourself in? This week we’ve got two new apps and three great games worth your attention.
health step

Healthsteps is not your typical health and fitness app. While the core of the experience is participating in a healthy activity, be it observing or exercising, what makes this one different is that it also functions as a dating platform.
As far as I can see, it can match you with people who fit your life goals and share the same interests in terms of fitness. I’m happily married, so I can’t say much about how well this app works, but if you fancy a cup of tea, it might be worth a try.
Rainbox Six is now available on mobile, but not as you know it. Rainbox Six: Smol plays exactly like traditional entries in the series, albeit with a more cartoonish style. There are still special forces tactical missions to rescue hostages and break through your favorite doors.
After playing, I found this game to be easier than a typical shooter, which isn’t really surprising considering its mobile nature. The good news is that as the game progresses, it gets a little more difficult. The only big problem here is that you need an active Netflix subscription to play this Android game.
shovel pirate

Shovel Pirate is a puzzle platformer game that has a classic Kirby feel when it comes to art style. There’s little here to distract from the larger story, but the game doesn’t need it.
Overall, this game is a lot of fun, but it’s pretty short. There are also two endings you can achieve, one good and one not so good.
Invincible: Defending the Earth

The Invincible series has been around for over 20 years, but despite its large fanbase, it wasn’t made into a mobile game until recently. Developed by Ubisoft, this new mobile game has a bit of a cash cow feel to it, featuring familiar gacha-like gameplay with plenty of quick combat, and an easy level-up system. However, if you like this type of game and are a fan of the series, it might be worth a try.
In my limited time playing it, I found the game to be plenty of fun, with great graphics and easy-to-learn mechanics. Much of the action felt repetitive, but on the plus side, the game is very stable and I didn’t notice any major bugs. In conclusion, this game may not live up to the traditions of its namesake series, but it’s better than nothing and can still serve as a fun diversion. It’s also free to play, but as you might expect, in-app purchases are required.
Nascar manager

The Nascar Manager has the responsibility of being a crew chief during the Nascar Sprint Cup Series. You can manage your team, win races and get rewards. If you’re a fan of both business strategy games and racing games, this blend might be perfect for you.
While playing, I found the graphics to be nice and the gameplay to be okay, but I didn’t find the in-app purchases, watching videos to earn coins, and other parts of the experience very appealing. . Personally, I’d rather pay a premium for a game like this and do away with ads and paid add-ons, but that’s just me. Still, it’s free, so it’s worth at least trying.
