Welcome to the 529th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here we discuss the latest mobile news and take a closer look at some of the most interesting new apps and games. Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of last week’s biggest highlights.

  • Android 15 is expected to bring several improvements, including a completely reworked desktop mode. Android has had a desktop mode since 2010, but the new and improved version offers better windowing capabilities and other improvements.
  • Google is suing two scammers for threatening the integrity of the Play Store, according to a new report. Two people uploaded his 87 fake crypto apps, affecting over 100,000 of his users around the world.
  • Google’s new Find My Device solution is finally on its way, at least according to a newly discovered Find My Device network page within the Google Play Services beta. This updated system was announced about a year ago and is designed to improve accuracy and make other improvements that will improve service. While the new system isn’t live yet, this is good news because it means it’s getting closer.
  • Disney Plus has announced plans to begin expanding password sharing restrictions to other countries, including the United States, following a successful test in Canada. The crackdown is expected to expand in June and be fully rolled out in September. While it’s disappointing to see more streaming services roll out measures like this, it’s not particularly surprising in the current economy.
  • Google Messages may soon offer full support for satellite messaging. We previously discovered lines in the app’s code that hinted at changes, but the new APK teardown also includes a hint that the service might be used for more than just SOS. It reveals more about how it works. “You can send messages with anyone, including emergency services.”
  • Google Search is one of the company’s most important products, and recent AI changes make it even better. Unfortunately, a new report also claims that Google may soon start charging for improvements using Gemini Advanced and Google One technologies. There’s no word yet on how much the company will charge or how the service will work.
  • Despite previous security concerns about Nothing’s iMessage workaround, Sunbird is back with a new app. It will be rolled out in “small steps” starting today. The new app replaces the old system and reportedly features a more secure implementation with a focus on privacy. Personally, I would be cautious here, but always try it at your own risk.

Android App Weekly: New Apps and Games

Looking for a new Android app or game to immerse yourself in? There weren’t any big new apps this week, but there were quite a few notable games.

lost potato

  • price: Free with in-app purchases

Lost Potato has been around for a few years now on Steam and other platforms, but it’s finally coming to Android. The concept of the game is simple. You are a potato and must defeat enemies while finding your way home. This roguelite is charming yet simple, making it perfect when you need a simple escape.

Astra: Knights of the Veda

  • price: Free with in-app purchases

Astra is a gacha RPG with a very interesting premise. So you’re dead, but you’re still alive anyway. The game begins with a large-scale battle and then dives into hack-in-slash action. Soon, the soldiers around you begin to come back to life as a kind of zombie. You, too, eventually die, but are brought back by a powerful goddess and tasked with saving the world. If you like this type of game but were hoping for something a little darker, this might be the game for you.

Horse Racing Hero: Horse Riding Game

  • price: Free with in-app purchases
horse racing hero

If you’re expecting something like Rival Stars Horse Riding, this game has a similar premise, but where its predecessor felt a bit more like a traditional video game, this one is more It has a mobile feel. It’s basically horse training, but the arcade approach is almost like a slot machine. You don’t have any direct control over your horse other than tapping the boost button, but you do have the option to choose which horse to use, etc. It’s not the best horse racing game I’ve played on mobile, but it was still a fun romp that kept my son entertained for about an hour.

Ghost Trick Phantom Thief Detective

Ghost Trick, the puzzle-solving mystery game from the same creators as the excellent Ace Attorney series, is back with a new HD remaster. The game has been around on Steam for a while now, and the Android port faithfully recreates that experience. The $30 price tag is also very expensive for a mobile game, but that’s the point. Even though you’re playing on your phone, this feels like a complete game and is sure to keep you occupied for hours to come.

The mystery of Eigengrau

  • price: Free with in-app purchases

Another puzzle solver, this atmospheric horror game has you escaping a nightmare room while solving a big mystery. Hopefully you can survive the process. With stable graphics and decent gameplay, this is a great dark and mature game for those who want to play something a little less casual on their phone.
