CONWAY, Ark. – Rural Arkansas students who want to pursue a STEM education may find new opportunities at Hendrix College in Conway.
The university announced Tuesday that it has received $2.5 million in STEM scholarships from the National Science Foundation. School officials said the scholarships are aimed at students from economically limited backgrounds who want to pursue education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
University officials said the award will be offered over six years to three groups of 10 students, adding that they are particularly interested in recruiting students from rural Arkansas and surrounding states.
Each scholarship provides $15,000 per student and a summer stipend for research or internships. School officials said the ultimate goal is to enable students to use limited infrastructure and access to broadband internet to solve problems in their communities.
Students also participate in the Arkansas Innovation Hub. community project It can be met through scientific solutions as part of education.
“This collaboration demonstrates the power of communities working together to provide resources for advancement in STEM,” said Innovation Hub Director Errin Stanger. “Our commitment to serving economically limited populations aligns directly with our mission.”
The STEM fields at this university are biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, biochemistry, molecular biology, and chemical physics.
