UTICA, N.Y. — Taylor Heise, a key player on the USA Women’s Senior National Hockey Team, did not score on Wednesday.

The Lake City native didn’t have to.

Team USA cruised to victory Wednesday night with a 4-0 victory over Switzerland in the first game of the qualifying round for the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship at Adirondack Bank Center.

Heise, who has eight goals and 22 assists in 14 World Championship games over the past two years, was the center of the U.S. team’s second line on Wednesday. Abby Murphy, a junior at the University of Minnesota, and Hannah Birka, a graduate student at Ohio State University, were in Heise’s wing. Birka recently helped the Buckeyes win his NCAA Division I National Championship.

Heise, playing in his third world championship, logged 17 minutes, 43 seconds of ice time Wednesday, the most of any U.S. forward. She led the tournament in 2022 with seven goals and 18 points, helping her Team USA win a silver medal. A year ago, she scored a goal and had 12 points as the U.S. won the gold medal in Canada.

The United States resumed play on Friday against the Czech Republic at 6:00 PM CDT (NHL Network) and opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Finland. The Americans then conclude pool play with games against Finland on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Canada on Monday at 6 p.m.

The quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s World Championship are scheduled for Thursday, April 11th, and the semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, April 13th. The bronze medal match is scheduled for Sunday, April 14th at noon, and the gold medal match will follow at 3 p.m.4pm

On Wednesday, the U.S. outscored Switzerland 55-11 in the opening round of pool play.

Clarkson University defender Hailey Wynn scored two points in the game, and veteran forward Hilary Knight had a goal and two assists. Goaltender Aerin Frankel made 11 stops for the shutout victory.

Wynn, a 20-year-old from Rochester, New York, scored his first goal of the World Championship in the second period, putting Team USA ahead. Her shot from the top of the circle went over the gloves of Swiss goalkeeper Andrea Brendli.

Kendall Coyne-Schofield, Team USA’s longtime forward, doubled the lead late in the second period when a shot from Alex Carpenter, who was standing directly in front of the Swiss crease, was deflected off her.

Captain Hilary Knight scored on a power play in the third period off a chip shot by defender Kayla Burns. Wynn then scored his second goal of the game in the final minute to make it 4-0.

Our newsroom may report stories under the byline “Staff.” The “Staff” byline is often used when rewriting basic news summaries that come from official sources and require little or no reporting, such as a city press release about a road closure. This byline is sometimes used when a news article has many authors or is created by aggregating previously reported news from different sources. If external sources are used, they will be noted within the story.
