If you’re lucky enough to own one of Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhones (iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max), you might know about features like NameDrop. These include the ability to place your phone closer together and a standby mode that turns your phone into a smart display.

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have some special new hardware features you need to know to get the most out of your new phones, including five great cameras, a new action button, and charging at USB 3.0 speeds there is.

If you haven’t had time to explore the features exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, there’s no time like the present. We’ve highlighted three unique Pro and Pro Max features you’ll want to set up, configure, and use. If you want to get the most out of your new iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, here’s what you need to know.

Look at this: 1 Month Check-in: We tested the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max batteries

1. Set up a new action button

The action button is one of the biggest changes in iPhone hardware in years, replacing the ring/silent switch that’s been used since the first iPhone models. In addition to switching between ring and switch modes, you can customize actions to turn on the flashlight, record voice memos, and run shortcuts.

in setting >[アクション ボタン]and swipe through the different actions you want to perform when you press the action button. The available actions are:

  • silent mode (Default): Switch between silent mode and incoming call mode.
  • concentration: Turn on the main focus mode, such as Do Not Disturb.
  • flashlight: Turn on the rear flashlight.
  • voice memo: Record a voice memo.
  • magnifying glass: Use the camera as a magnifying glass.
  • shortcut: Trigger downloaded or created shortcuts.
  • accessibility: Use the selected accessibility features.
  • do nothing

If you see an arrow below an action, it means you have additional options. To assign an action to a button, simply swipe and hold the action in settings. When finished, exit the settings page.

2. Change default camera lens when opening camera

The default main camera on iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max is a 24mm lens, which corresponds to a 1x zoom. This is the standard lens, but if you always end up zooming a little bit when taking photos, you can switch to another default lens on your main camera.

in setting > camera > main camera, Choose from three main lenses.

  • 24mm – 1x (default)
  • 28mm – 1.2x
  • 35mm – 1.5x

The next time you open the main camera, the camera will start with the new focal length you selected, such as 1.2x or 1.5x. If you want to change lenses, tap the zoom control on the main camera to manually switch between 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm. You can also hold Control and drag the slider for more precise control.

On the far right, you can see that 1.2x is displayed as the default focal length.

3. Take advantage of iPhone 15 Pro’s USB-C 3.0 speeds

Both the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have USB-C ports, but the two models support the same USB 2.0 speeds (480 megabits per second) as previous iPhone models with Lightning ports. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max also have USB-C ports, but they support USB 3.0 speeds (10 Gbit/s), making them 20 times faster.

What does this mean for you? First, you’ll need a USB-C cable that supports 3.0 speeds. The USB-C cable that comes with your iPhone only supports 2.0 speeds, so you’ll need to purchase an additional cable (Like this one on Amazon).

If you need 3.0 speeds, you can’t use the braided USB-C cable included in the iPhone 15 Pro packaging.

Now that you have the right cable, you can quickly transfer data between your iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. If you want to transfer data from iTunes to iPhone or vice versa, it should be faster. It works for all files transferred from iPhone, especially to flash drives. It’s also faster.

Apple also has a page highlighting that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can record ProRes video (a high-quality lossy video compression format) directly to external storage devices at up to 4K at 60 frames per second. It’s a niche feature, but if you’re a cinematographer or video editor, shooting in ProRes gives you more detail and color depth, allowing you to color grade later without sacrificing quality. Recording directly to an external storage device saves space and time, and allows you to connect your SD directly to your computer without having to transfer it from your iPhone first.
