Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said Sunday that former President Trump is “playing politics” in an attempt to sink a bipartisan border deal in the Senate.
CNN’s Dana Bash asked Haley whether President Trump was trying to play into the border deal to further his bid for the White House on Sunday’s “State of the Union.” President Trump has slammed the possibility of a bipartisan border deal, which has been under negotiation among senators since late last year, saying he doesn’t need legislation to address border issues.
“Well, I don’t think anyone should do border politics. First of all, he shouldn’t get involved and tell Republicans to wait until the election because we don’t want this to help.” saying [President] Biden won,” Haley responded. “We can’t wait another day. Millions of people are coming to that border, and they’re not being vetted.”
“America is acting like it’s September 10th. We’d better remember what September 12th felt like, because it only takes one. We’re in politics now. Not,” Haley continued.
Bash also asked Haley again if Trump was “playing politics” regarding the border deal. President Trump has denied trying to block Biden from achieving a border victory, saying he supports bipartisan legislation if it’s a “great border bill” that solves a “problem.”
“Of course it is. He’s telling them not to do anything, and he’s playing politics completely. But I think what they need to do is put in place tough immigration laws. “I think so,” Hailey replied.
Haley also said the bill should include the “Remain in Mexico” immigration policy and other tougher border measures enacted in 2019 under the Trump administration.
“So we need to strengthen our refugee laws to make sure people don’t come here for unreasonable reasons. That’s the only way to get this problem under control,” Haley said. .
