Hagerman School District donates $884,248 to build food science lab

HAGERMAN, ID (KMVT/KSVT) — Nearly $7.5 million has been awarded to school districts across the state in funding for career technical education programs. A large cash prize has been awarded here locally to the Hagerman School District.

“On behalf of the Idaho Career Ready Student Program Council, I am pleased to announce that the proposal from Hagerman Joint School District No. 233 has been approved as the Idaho Career Ready Program for an amount up to $884,248.” Josiah said. Mr. Knapp is the FFA state reporter.

The Hagerman School District started its Agri-Food Science Program nearly eight years ago with the goal of one day establishing a state-of-the-art food science lab, and this grant makes that possible.

“This is something that Mr. Martin and I have been planning for several years, and I think his way of saying it, is that our vision and goal is for students to come and have real-world, project-based, hands-on experience. “My personal philosophy on education is that kids need to see how it’s actually done in the industry,” said agriculture instructor Daniel Knapp.

Kurt Martin, who co-directs the program with Knapp, said it is a dream come true and will help ensure a pool of applicants to hire from, not only for students but also for the Magic Valley’s many food industries. It says that it will be.

“This facility is nationally inspected and we operate under HACCP, or Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, manufacturing principles. All certified food industries around the world operate under that system. So, if possible, we introduce these students to that program, and we teach them in themed units,” said Food Science Lecturer Kurt Martin.

The new building will be built right next to the current building and will be a 40 x 30 processing lab.

“Our whole program is about teaching kids life skills and introducing them to industries where we do a lot of food processing, whether it’s meat processing or dairy, like Chobani or Clif Bar. Magic Valley,” Martin said.
