The resumption of the Champions League comes at the perfect time for Manchester City, with the return of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne from injury, with the holders looking formidable.

Josep Guardiola’s side head to FC Copenhagen on Tuesday for the first leg of their last-16 tie on the back of a 10-game winning streak in all competitions.

The team’s rapid progress, which began while Haaland and De Bruyne were still out with injuries, has gained momentum since their return.

Haaland scored his first goal since November as City ultimately defeated Everton with a 2-0 win at the Etihad on Saturday.

De Bruyne started the season with a torn hamstring that kept him out for five months, but he started on the bench with Guardiola taking charge of Belgium with the Champions League in mind.

But the 32-year-old has looked like his old self since returning with seven goals in eight games this season.

De Bruyne was the player who scored Haaland’s second goal on Saturday and the Norwegian was delighted to be able to do it again.

“I try to make the same run as anyone, but with him it’s like I know I’m going to do it perfectly. I know the ball is coming,” Haaland said.

“You can see that when he has the ball, he doesn’t look at it for even two seconds because I’m so focused on running towards the goal.

“That’s the difference, and it’s not a bad thing against other players, but it’s the little difference of knowing the ball is coming or not.”

– Double treble? –

Last season, City became the second English team in history to win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble.

Guardiola scoffed at suggestions that he could keep all three players at the start of the season, but they are well on their way to achieving that goal.

The race for the Premier League title is an interesting situation, with the top three teams separated by two points, but a win against Brentford next week would see City lead Liverpool and Arsenal.

A trip to Luton awaits in the FA Cup fifth round and Copenhagen are not expected to cause the English champions much trouble despite their success against their Manchester opponents this season. ing.

The Danes overwhelmed Manchester United 4-3 in November as the Red Devils were eliminated in the group stage.

But City are a different beast as they aim to become only the second club in the Champions League era to retain the trophy, following Real Madrid’s three-peat from 2016 to 2018.

Guardiola can choose a team that suits him perfectly and has a wealth of options at his disposal.

De Bruyne was joined by Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish and Josko Gbardiol on the bench at the weekend.

Phil Foden believes he is in the groove of his life after scoring a hat-trick in last week’s 3-1 win over Brentford.

Rodri, the midfield anchor, had never lost in 51 games for club and country until March last year.

All three of City’s league defeats this season came when the Spaniard was suspended in the autumn.

However, City have had their best season under Guardiola and are improving as the season draws to a close.

After their breakthrough in the Champions League last season, even the best Europe has to offer will be enough to stop them lifting the trophy again at Wembley on June 1.
