Google’s status bar icons could look a lot like Samsung’s in Android 15

summary

  • Android 15 will bring major design changes to Pixel phones, potentially bringing status bar icons closer to Samsung’s.
  • The developer preview hides segmented battery and connectivity indicators, along with a horizontal battery display.
  • Android 15 may also introduce more haptic feedback, such as vibrations when you tap a quick settings toggle or change the volume.

The last time Google significantly redesigned Android was when it switched to a wallpaper-based Material You color scheme in Android 12. Android 15 doesn’t seem to have a similarly big update in store, but it could be one of the biggest design changes. On his Android on the Pixel smartphone that appeared for the first time in a while. Evidence found in Android 15 Developer Preview 2 suggests that Google could significantly redesign its status bar icons to bring them closer to the ones Samsung has been using for years.

Here’s what we know about Android 15 now that the first developer preview is live.

Android Authority contributor Mishaal Rahman was able to enable hidden flags in the developer preview that show up-to-date battery, Wi-Fi, and mobile radio indicators. Rather than displaying smooth, completely filled blocks, the blocks are clearly segmented and have varying levels of gray and white to indicate how well they are connected. Meanwhile, the battery has been flipped from a vertical design to a horizontal one, and the remaining battery power can now be displayed inside the battery instead of next to it. However, if you don’t like it, you can turn it off.

Status bar design hasn’t changed much since Android 5 Lollipop, when Google first introduced Material Design and solid block status icons. This has changed slightly in Android 10. You can choose from several alternative designs, some of which are similar to those seen in Android 15 leaks. However, Google removed this option in his Android 12. With this in mind, Android 15 could bring some of these alternative options back again, or Google could completely switch to a different design for everyone using his Pixel.

Android 15 may also add more haptic feedback

The new status bar design has the familiar segmented icons from Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor (left to right)

Mishaal Rahman also points out that Google is also working on more haptic feedback in Android 15. When you tap or hold the quick settings toggle in the notification shade, you’ll notice a subtle vibration. As with the brightness adjustment, the volume slider appears when you press any of the volume keys on your phone, and you also get haptic feedback when you move the volume slider with touch.

The new icon design and haptic feedback have not yet been published and may undergo significant changes or may not make it into the final release. It is also possible that Google has already finalized these features but wants to wait for the release of the first Android 15 beta to make them available to the public. Still, the icon design and haptic feedback may change significantly by the stable release later this year.
