What you need to know
- Google used an internal foldable phone prototype called Jumbojack in 2021 to test software for the Pixel Fold and other foldable phones.
- An apparently leaked Jumbo Jack prototype is now on sale online.
- At the time, it was revealed that Google was using the latest Galaxy Z Fold to test Android 12L.
Early on in the Pixel Fold leaks, we heard about two foldable smartphone prototypes created internally at Google: Passport and Jumbojack. This week, someone with access to the leaked Jumbo Jack unit put it up for sale.
Mishal Rahman posted a photo Xwhich shows a foldable smartphone running a stock version of Android 12L with a build number starting with “pixel_jumbojack.”
9to5Google, which first reported the news, first revealed the existence of Google’s second foldable device for testing software in 2021. Google used this to test how the app looked when using the phone in different “postures” such as “open” and “open”. “closed” or “inverted.”
This is said to be a “jumbo jack,” a prototype that Google used to test the Android software experience on foldable devices before developing a working Pixel Fold prototype. The hardware is Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, and the software is Android 12L. Someone put this up for sale online 👿 pic.twitter.com/9GbTWj1CU4February 14, 2024
Rahman notes that the unit looks like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 with thicker bezels along the top and bottom of the display. This foldable device has a similar look to his Pixel Fold, which was eventually launched two years later, with noticeably thicker top and bottom borders.
It appears that Google already knew what its foldable device would look like at the time and had modified Samsung’s hardware for testing. It’s also possible that Google did so with Samsung’s blessing, as the software developed will be reused for future Galaxy foldables like the Z Fold 5.
At the time, we speculated that it might be a Pixel Flip, since the name “Jumbo Jack” implied a hamburger-like fold. This stolen prototype, apart from being an interesting piece of manufacturing history, seems to prove otherwise. That said, Google’s leaked 2022 roadmap shows the company plans to sell a flip-style foldable device in 2025, which could eventually happen. .
Luhrmann didn’t say where the leaked Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Pixel Fold prototype hybrid is being sold, but you probably won’t want to buy it. You’re better off buying a new Pixel Fold with Android 14 software instead, since Google might be able to shut it down remotely.
This is the second Pixel Fold leak in the past week. Last Wednesday, photos emerged of a purported Pixel Fold 2, showing a redesigned camera module, a narrower cover screen, and a more square internal display.
The latest rumor is that Google has delayed the release of the Pixel Fold 2 to use the new Tensor G4 chip, so we may have to wait a while for the Pixel Fold 2. In the meantime, the Pixel Fold is currently $400 off in case you want a proper Jumbojack successor.
Tastier than a hamburger
Google’s giant 7.6-inch foldable phone is designed for hardcore Pixel fans who want a different software experience than the Galaxy Z Fold series. It’s stylish when folded, the cover screen is more comfortable to use, and it has a great camera.
