  • Google rolls out February 2024 security patch to global, Verizon, and SoftBank (Japan) users.
  • This lightweight update aims to fix some issues specific to some devices, following a similar trend in January.
  • Google recently introduced a “minor” beta 3.1 update to Pixel, focusing on resolving some persistent issues.

Google has begun pushing the latest security updates to its range of Pixel devices in hopes of fixing some specific issues.

According to a Pixel community post, the February 2024 security update will be rolling out from Pixel 5a (5G) to Pixel 8 Pro (including Pixel Fold and Tablet). Those using Pixel 8 series devices will receive an updated version UQ1A.240205.004.The rest of the devices will detect the version UQ1A.240205.002, World wide.

As detailed in the Android Security Bulletin, this month’s patch includes six system fixes, one of which is labeled “critical” related to the Bluetooth module. Additionally, there are 9 framework fixes labeled as “High” priority by Google.

Google’s changelog lists several fixes for Pixel display and graphics issues. One fix aims to resolve certain “breakages” that Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro devices occasionally experience under “certain conditions.” The Pixel Fold is getting a display fix that is expected to resolve the outer display issue.

Here are the remaining fixes and version numbers for Verizon and Japan:

  • General improvements to system stability and performance in certain situations (for Pixel 8, 8 Pro cameras)
  • Fixed stability or performance issues with certain third-party apps (Pixel 5a, Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series, Pixel Fold).

Google advises users that some fixes may be specific to certain carriers or regions. It’s also worth remembering that the update should spread more widely as the week continues.

The February update mirrors the January update, and both fixes are fairly lightweight. Last month’s patch touched on display and camera issues, and the issue is being raised again. Various Pixel 8 camera crashes and annoying black screen issues were fixed in January.

Meanwhile, Google’s Pixel series recently got a “minor” Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3.1 update that targets an overall issue. Display issues seem to be a recurring theme with the company’s latest devices, and the company is trying to nip the issue in the bud with its Android 14 experimental environment. It was quickly followed by an Android 14 beta update that targeted only the Pixel 5a.

This patch fixed a series of issues that users have been experiencing since Beta 3 arrived in early January.

On the software side, Google packed a ton of AI into the Pixel 8 Pro. The device recently adopted Google’s “Gemini” AI model with powerful on-device AI capabilities.
