ANDROID smartphones may soon be able to edit text messages as well.
Details of a surprise free upgrade to Google Messages have been leaked online.
It’s the default messaging app on Android smartphones, and Google says it’s used by more than 1 billion people.
Apple’s own alternative, iMessage on Messages, introduced the ability to edit text in iOS 16.
However, Google Messages is yet to offer this feature, even though hints of its development were previously spotted in a test version of the app.
Now, gadget blog TheSpAndroid has found more evidence that the beta test version of Google Messages includes message editing features.
If you long press on a chat, a pencil icon will appear.
When you tap the pencil icon, a text editing box titled “Edit Message” will appear.
You can then click Send and edit your message.
Of course, we don’t know exactly when or in what form this feature will arrive.
However, Android fans upvoted a Reddit thread about the leak hundreds of times.
One user who replied to the thread cheered: “That’s a great idea!”
However, some users complained that it took too long to arrive.
One commenter responded, “I still don’t understand why this wasn’t done the way it was at least 10 years ago.”
“Google could have cornered the entire world except the US with this, because that’s what WhatsApp is about. 1 billion users, oh well.”
